Blakeston was prolific and varied in his output, which included poetry, crime fiction and travel books,alongside his film writings; he was also an artist and illustrator. Max Chapman was an "inventive, committed painter" and artist, who was "one of the last links with the rarefied aesthetic world of Ricketts and Shannon in the 1920s and the later Bohemianism of Soho and Fitzrovia."
