Among the archives of the Chester Beatty Collection is a handlist dated 2 march 1914, where the incredible number of over 1600 bottles is already listed in his collection. Almost half of these are mineral examples .Beatty was acquiring on average an incredible…number of almost 90 bottles a year if indeed he did start collecting c.1868 when a student. Unfortunately the handlist describes material only and it is impossible to identify with certainty more then a few bottles in the collection today. It is now known that Beatty disposed of a third of his collection through a London dealer prior to his move to Dublin in 1950. He was also known to have given generous gifts of bottles to family members and friends. This book comprises of 275 pieces of snuff bottles in jade, quartz, other stones, organic, glass, porcelain, metal and enamel materials which are all in full color photos with English description.

This is 2 volumes of a 3-volume catalogue describing and illustrating the collection of Indian miniatures belonging to Alfred Beatty, a copper mining mogul, known for… owning one of the world's greatest collections of oriental and western miniatures and manuscripts. The illustrations depict the artwork of eminent Mughal court painters and artists from the 16th century and beyond and are very high quality ("The main feature of the catalogue was all along intended to be the illustrations, which were to be of the highest possible quality. They speak for themselves, and it is to be hoped that their fidelity as facsimiles, which can be vouched for, will be appreciated by scholars." - from the introduction). Illustrated with 9 colour plates and 40 monochrome plates to volume III, and a colour frontispiece to volume I. Goetz in The Burlington Magazine: ".thanks to the scrutinizing and learned investigations of Sir Thomas Arnold, everything possible has been done to abstract the greatest amount of information from [the manuscripts]. There is a detailed description of each manuscript and portfolio, its history and general condition, subject and arrangement, size, paper, calligraphy, date, illuminations and illustrations; in the same way the events, personages, etc., depicted in each painting are explained and the inscriptions sometimes found on them have been translated. .Sir Thomas Arnold has written an excellent Introduction to the pictorial art of the Mughal period .It is . a catalogue prepared and published in a manner which it would be difficult to overpraise." Covers somewhat rubbed and stained and slightly darkened, a little bumped at spine-ends and corners, Plate 53 has tears at the hinge (not affecting image or causing looseness), contents otherwise Very Good indeed.
