Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition softcover exhibition catalogue issued in conjunction with the 1957 exhibitions at Knoedler & Company, New York (April 9-May 4), and the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge (May 16-September 15). This catalogue documents the notable collection of Louise and Joseph Pulitzer, Jr., featuring major figures of modern European art including Picasso, Miró, Matisse, Rodin, and Pissarro. Scholarly entries by Charles Scott Chetham provide context and analysis for each work, reflecting mid-century interpretations of Cubism, modern painting, and sculpture. The volume is well-produced, with crisp typography by The Stinehour Press and high-quality black-and-white plates by The Meriden Gravure Company - both highly regarded names in American fine printing. Condition is Very Good: interior pages are clean, bright, and unmarked throughout; no ownership marks or annotations observed. Binding remains tight with a strong, intact spine. The original wraps show moderate age toning, light edge wear, and minor surface soiling consistent with age, but remain fully sound and presentable. A true first edition of this 1957 exhibition catalogue, with no subsequent printings indicated. Typical of Fogg Museum publications of the period, the colophon credits The Stinehour Press (design and letterpress) and The Meriden Gravure Company (illustrations), both associated with high-quality mid-century art book production. Louise Vauclain Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer, Jr. were prominent mid-20th-century American art collectors whose holdings became especially influential in shaping museum exhibitions of modern European art. Joseph Pulitzer, Jr. (1913-1993) was the grandson of the famed newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer and served as publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, continuing the family's legacy in journalism while also cultivating a serious interest in the arts. Together, he and his wife Louise assembled a refined collection emphasizing modern painting and sculpture, particularly works connected to Cubism and its successors. The Pulitzers were known not only for collecting but also for lending generously to major institutions, as evidenced by the 1957 Fogg Art Museum exhibition documented in this catalogue. Their collecting approach reflected a scholarly and connoisseur-driven sensibility, often guided by leading dealers and critics of the period. Joseph Pulitzer, Jr. later played a significant role in the arts in St. Louis, including involvement in the founding of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, established by his family to support the continued public engagement with art and architecture.
