Based on the 1968 exhibition Mutual Influences Between Japanese and Western Arts, held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, this work initially emphasises the historical aspects of relationships between Japan and the West through articles by such well known experts as Bernard Dorival, Michiaki Kawakita, Clay Lancaster, Teijiro Muramatsu, Jo Okada, Giulio C. Argan, Gordon Wahburn, Shuji Takashina and Noburu Kawazoe. Following this is a recording of a symposium held in 1972 to analyse the current situation and provide a forum for ideas on how Japan can best contribute to future development of cross-cultural exchanges in the arts.
