Hardcover. Color-printed boards with the title in white down a multi-colored spine. There is a dust jacket with the title in white down a black spine. Pages: (6), 7-111, (1). Profusely illustrated with color images. "With a career spanning almost three decades, Kerry James Marshall is well known for his complex and multilayered…portrayals of youths, interiors, nudes, housing estate gardens, land- and seascapes, all of which synthesize different traditions and genres while seeking to counter stereotypical representations of black people in society. Working across various mediums, from paintings and comic-style drawings to sculptural installations, photographs, and videos, the artist conflates actual and imagined events from African-American history, integrating a range of stylistic influences to address the limited historiography of black art. Produced on the occasion of Marshall's first exhibition at David Zwirner in London in 2014 and designed by JNL Design in Chicago, Look See features beautiful reproductions of every painting on view in the show as well as numerous details, preparatory drawings, installation photographs, new scholarship by Robert Storr and a conversation between the artist and Angela Choon, a Senior Partner at the gallery. As suggested by the show's title, these portraits use the etymological differences between looking and seeing as their point of departure, featuring subjects whose dissociated stares seem as defiant as they are mystifying. In keeping with his signature approach, Marshall has painted his figures in strikingly opaque black pigments, both fashioning and abstracting their presences in order to assimilate the limitations and contradictions of style, subject, and chronology inherent in art-historical narratives written from a white, Western perspective. Taken all together, the range of materials included in Look See constitutes a vibrant and comprehensive portrait of Marshall's original and ever-evolving practice." VG/VG: Exlibrary book. Stamp on half-title page. Stickers on back free end page. Due date card on back pasted end page. Stamp on penultimate page.

(340 in color. ) -- with a bonus offer--; The Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara (born 1933) has nurtured a…fascination with counting and time for more than 40 years now, most famously through the ongoing execution of his famous "date paintings" of the Today series: a daily ritual to conclude only on the day of his death. The first painting in the series was executed in New York on January 4, 1966; since then, On Kawara has carried out the procedure at regular intervals in cities throughout the world, painting each day, month and year in a white sans-serif script against a monochrome background in the language conventions of the country he is in. When not displayed, each painting is stored in a box and accompanied by a local newspaper clipping of the day. Despite numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, Date Painting(s) in New York and 136 Other Cities is the first retrospective of the 45 years of On Kawara's date paintings. Including over 180 date paintings, the book is divided into two parts: one that covers the complete series of paintings done in New York, and a second that focuses on the series of works done in different locales throughout the world. The result offers a unique insight into the role that place and a life of travel has played in a body of work that has been defined by time and chronology.

VG. 31x21cm, 168 pp. "Published on the occasion of his debut exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, "Devil's Pie" presents new work by Chris Ofili. Deriving its title from singer-songwriter D'Angelo's 1998 lyrical meditation on temptation and retribution, the project… continues Ofili's previous thematic and formal explorations, uniting for the first time the artist's work in sculpture, painting, printmaking, and graphite drawing. This catalogue includes texts by art writer and curator, Klaus Kertess, and writer Cameron Shaw" - publisher's description. Minor rubbing. An 8cm tear to front exterior hinge. VG.
