Die genaue Identität des Schöpfers des lsenheimer Altares ist ein bis heute nicht geklärtes Geheimnis. Das Gesamtwerk ist zwar in mühevoller Kleinarbeit durch die Kunsthistoriker zusammengetragen worden ; dazu gehören Meisterwerke wie das kürzlich entdeckte heilige Abendmahl, die in Basel und Washington aufbewahrten Kreuzigungen, die Verspottung Christi in München, die vier Heiligen des Heller-Altares in Frankfurt und Karlsruhe und natürlich der im Museum Unterlinden ausgestellte Wandelaltar. Doch gibt es kaum Archivaufzeichnungen, wenn, so enthalten sie derart viele Widersprüche, dass eine ernstzunehmende Biographie dieses Künstlers zu schreiben nicht möglich ist. Der Name Grünewald, den ihm 1675 sein erster Biograph, der Kupferstecher und Kunsthistoriker Sandrart gab, blieb darum die einfachste Art und Weise, ihn zu benennen. Seit 1938 haben die meisten Forscher herausgefunden, dass dieser Grünewald am ehesten mit einem gewissen Mathis Gothart Nithart identisch ist, der in verschiedenen Texten erwähnt wird. Seit 1971 ist diese Übereinstimmung, die sich anscheinend ergeben hatte, wiederum in Frage gestellt, weil manche in ihm einen gewissen Mathis Grün sahen, wie bereits im Jahre 1930 einmal vorgeschlagen worden war. Die Diskussion darüber ist immer noch nicht abgeschlossen ; die Argumente für die eine oder andere Person werden nach wie vor aufs lebhafteste ins Feld geführt. Ein wissenschaftliches Colloquium über die Person Grünewalds, das 1974 in Strassburg und Colmar veranstaltet worden war, erbrachte als wichtigstes Ergebnis die Feststellung, dass die vorhandenen Unterlagen bisher keinen endgültigen Beweis zur Klärung der Frage geliefert haben. Die genauen Lebensdaten Grünewalds sind nach wie vor wenig gesichert. Doch hat sich jedenfalls die Hypothese als falsch erwiesen, er sei um 1455 geboren und ein Schüler Martin Schongauers gewesen.
