Ausgangspunkt dafur ist die Schlacht von Nancy, in der 1477 der bis dahin unbedeutende lothringische Herzog Rene II. unerwartet Karl den Kuhnen, den machtigen Herzog von Burgund, vernichtend schlug. Mit diesem Sieg und dem gleichzeitigen Tod Karls griff Rene unverhofft in europaische Grossmachtpolitik ein. Der Versuch, diese neue, herausgehobene Stellung seines Hofes zu festigen, manifestiert sich in einer reichen, alle Gattungen umfassenden Stiftungstatigkeit. Ihr Hauptthema ist dabei die Schlacht selbst. Neben der Mehrung des Ruhmes des Herzogs dient ihre vielfaltige Inszenierung der gezielten Ausbildung eines bis dahin nicht existierenden lothringischen >(Proto-) Nationalbewusstseins<: So werden eine Fulle von identitatsstiftenden Orten, Gnadenbildern und Symbolen etabliert, die bis heute fur Lothringen ihre Bedeutung behalten haben.
