The Thomas Fairfax who owned our copy may have been the 5th Lord Fairfax of Cameron [1657-1710], an English politician and peer, or Thomas Fairfax D.D. Doctor and Student appeared in numerous editions. An authority well into the eighteenth century, it influenced several writers, including Blackstone. The inscription dated 1870 on the title-page likely indicates the ownership of the young John Frederick Bowman (1850-1914), soon to become a solicitor in London. His father was the great British anatomist and surgeon Sir William Bowman, 1st Baronet (1816-1892). This specific 1792 edition was produced by James Moore, one of Dublin's most prominent and ambitious late-eighteenth-century printers. Because British copyright restrictions did not legally apply to Ireland until the Acts of Union in 1800, Moore and his Dublin contemporaries could freely publish these affordable, handy editions.
