The authors, who are German, offer compelling evidence that the 350 doctors tried at Nuremberg in 1946-47 were not the so-called black sheep of the German medical profession, but rather a small part of a much larger group of doctors, university professors, scientists and researchers involved in medical crimes. The authors draw their chilling conclusions directly from the archives of mental institutions, hospitals and experimentation centers. An abundance of evidence, sometimes absorbing, sometimes overwhelming, demonstrates how the Nazis employed medicine to "cleanse" Germany of the "sick, alien, and disturbing"--A goal firmly supported by the intelligentsia. By 1939, euthanasia was the method ordained by the Nazis to eliminate the infirm, mentally ill, socially or racially "inferior" and anyone unable to work. Hundreds of thousands, including children, were killed while medical professionals profitted. Dr. Hermann Voss, chief anatomist at the Reich University of Posen, turned a handsome profit on the sale of the skeletons and skulls of dead Poles. His diary is an illustration of Hannah Arendt's banality of evil, "Yesterday, two wagons full of Polish ashes were taken away. Outside my office, the robinias are blooming beautifully, just as in Leipzig." Auch das 375jährige Gründungsjubiläum der Universität Gießen wurde nicht als Chance genützt, die eigene, noch nicht allzu weit zurückliegende "dunkle" Vergangenheit kritisch aufzuhellen. Wenn die Zeit zwischen 1933 und 1945 überhaupt "zur Sprache kommt", überwiegen noch immer Formeln wie "Niedergang", "Druck von außen" etc. Offenbar sind die Widerstände gegen undurchschaute, auch heute weiter bestehende Kontinuitäten noch immer mächtig genug, um eine Aufarbeitung zu verhindern. Eine Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte der Medizin im Faschismus ist dringend geboten, da diese wissenschaftliche Disziplin - nicht nur in Gießen - einen wesentlichen Stützpfeiler nationalsozialistischer Ideologie und Praxis ausmachte. Dabei kann es nicht um persönliche Denunziation oder moralische Diffamierung gehen. Vielmehr sollen die Widersprüche einer solchen "helfenden Wissen-schaft" und ihrer offenbar latenten Bereitschaft zu lebensfeindlichem Handeln hier zum Thema ge-macht werden. Angesichts einer fast erdrückenden Neigung zu Arrangement und Anpassung gegen-über faschistischer Ausgrenzungs- und Vernichtungspolitik erhalten deshalb Verweigerung und Wi-derstand von Medizinern eine besondere Bedeutung. Dementsprechend werden nicht nur die spek-takulären Maßnahmen (z.B. die Praxis zwangsweiser Sterilisierung) dokumentiert, sondern gestützt auf Archivquellen, Publikationen und Interviews, gerade institutionelle, wissenschaftliche und biografische Entwicklungslinien an der Gießener Medizinischen Fakultät der 30er und 40er Jahre nachgezeichnet. Die Beschränkung mehr auf die Beschreibung ist der Tatsache geschuldet, daß wir uns mit dem Thema nicht professionell beschäftigten, sondern seinerzeit versuchten, uns neben unserer Ausbildung als Medizinstudenten bzw. als Doktorand die Geschichte jenes Bereiches anzueignen, in dem wir selbst arbeiten - auch um zu einer kritischen Reflexion der eigenen Rolle zu gelangen. Dafür wollte diese Arbeit zunächst einmal Material anbieten. Das Material haben wir zum einen im Kapitel ober Rassenhygiene und Zwangssterilisation zusammengefaßt. Der zweite Teil behandelt die Geschichte der Medizinischen Fakultät eher personenbezogen. Es wird zuerst auf die Veränderungen innerhalb der Professorenschaft 1933 und 1945, auf ihre politische Orientierung sowie einige markante Punkte der Fakultätsgeschichte von 1933 bis 1945 eingegangen. Im Anschluß daran werden die wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten und politischen Verhaltensweisen einiger Hygieniker / Rassenhygieniker und Psychiater skizziert. Die Problematik dieses Vorgehens ist uns bewußt; Männer machen nicht Geschichte, außerdem ist nur das akademische Personal berücksichtigt. Für uns läßt sich allerdings heute nur noch über das Archivmaterial und die Veröffentlichungen dieser Personen die Geschichte der Gießener Medizinischen Fakultät während des Nationalsozialismus nachvollziehen. Als zum Teil bisher unveröffentlichtes Material wollten wir es einem größeren Publikum zur Kenntnis bringen. Als Gegenstück wird im dritten Kapitel in Form eines Interviews die Biographie einer Medizinstudentin zu Anfang der 40er Jahre dargestellt, die den Anpassungsanforderungen an nationalsozialistische Denk- und Handlungsgebote nicht nachkommen wollte.
