A wonderful book, full of wit, black humor and love between and ex-slave and a young white boy. In spite of the fact that some of the words are no longer "politically correct" this book is a must for all those persons who would like a closer look at what life was really like in the South in the years following the Civil War, and what gave great joy to the reader or listener. Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication. Many of these stories are believed to have Creek Indian influence too. Ref CC 7. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Decorative green binding with stamped Victorian designs and gilt lettering. Early 1883 printing of the author's second book. Illustrated by Church. Boards with moderate wear; edges frayed; corners exposed; pages dusty and soiled with light age toning. Joel Chandler Harris (1848 - 1908) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Not long after taking a newspaper job, Harris began writing the Uncle Remus stories as a serial to "preserve in permanent shape those curious mementoes of a period that will no doubt be sadly misrepresented by historians of the future." The stories, mostly collected directly from the African-American oral storytelling tradition, were revolutionary in their use of dialect, animal personages, and serialized landscapes. Frederick Stuart Church (1842-1924) was an American artist, working mainly as an illustrator and especially known for his (often allegorical) depiction of animals. Frederick S. Church (illustratore).…
