A wonderful book, full of wit, black humor and love between and ex-slave and a young white boy. In spite of the fact that some of the words are no longer "politically correct" this book is a must for all those persons who would like a closer look at what life was really like in the South in the years following the Civil War, and what gave great joy to the reader or listener. Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication. Many of these stories are believed to have Creek Indian influence too. Ref CC 7.

Joel Chandler Harris (1848 - 1908) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Not long after taking a newspaper job, Harris began writing the Uncle Remus stories as a serial to "preserve in permanent shape those curious mementoes of a period that will no doubt be sadly misrepresented by historians of the future." The stories, mostly collected directly from the African-American oral storytelling tradition, were revolutionary in their use of dialect, animal personages, and serialized landscapes. Frederick Stuart Church (1842-1924) was an American artist, working mainly as an illustrator and especially known for his (often allegorical) depiction of animals.

Though framed as innocent children's stories, the fables carry deep socio-political allegories: Slavery Survival Strategy: Most of the stories originated from West African oral traditions brought to the Americas by enslaved people. On an allegorical level, Br'er Rabbit represents the enslaved African American population who had to use intellect to survive against the dominant white plantation owners (represented by the stronger animals). The book completely revolutionized animal-centric children's literature. It heavily influenced subsequent works like Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and modern animated characters like Bugs Bunny. No date on title page but states Twenty-First Edition. 416 pages. An early printing of the second Uncle Remus book, illustrated with frontispiece and 19 plates by Frederick Church. While working for the Atlanta Constitution in 1876, Harris "invented Uncle Remus" He published Uncle Remus pieces regularly in the Constitution, and they were extremely popular. In 1880 he collected them into his first book. Remus was a composite of three elderly slaves he had known, the stories themselves were his retellings of old African American tales. He rigorously researched his material, often collecting several versions of the same story until he felt he had the most authentic one. Hinges cracked, but generally a bright, clean copy of this title. Record # 378494.
