Aggiungi al carrelloFather Gabriel Strobl (1846-1925), a dipterist of worldwide renown, spent most of his active scientific life as a priest and professor of natural science in the Benedictine monastery of Admont, a small town in the Styrian Alps of Austria. Between 1880 and 1910 he published some 50 papers, dealing mostly with the Alpine and south European (mostly Spanish) Diptera. He built up a celebrated Natural History Museum in the Benedictine monastery in Admont, and in particular an important scientific collection of Diptera that comprised more then 50,000 specimens of Diptera. Gabriel Strobl described a total of 902 new Diptera species-group names (species, varieties or forms), which are revised and discussed in the present monograph. This publication gives details on all the type specimens housed in the Strobl Diptera Collection in Admont, their type-status, their designations and identifications, and also gives information on the possible location in other museums and institutions of type specimens that have not been found in the Strobll Collection in Admont. This book conforms to the EU and ICZN recommendations to publicise precise evidence about the location of all animal types. It is a publication that follows in the footsteps of previously published revisions of the type-material of Diptera published by A. C. Pont (1995) on the British dipterists G. H. Verrall and J. E. Collin, and by H. de Jong (2000) on the Dutch dipterist J. C. H. de Meijere. The introduction to this publication also provides details on the history and significance of the Benedictine monastery in Admont for studies of natural history in Europe from the time of the Middle Ages to the present, as well as the recent history of the Natural History Museum in Admont. A brief biography of Gabriel Strobl and his significance for dipterology and for science in general is also given. 281 pp., 28 color figs, hardcover gr. 8 [24.6 x 17 cm].

Aggiungi al carrelloThe subfamily Tachydromiinae (Diptera, Empididae) is a group of small flies, 0.7 to 5.5 mm in length, that is generally highly adapted for predaceous activity. An exact knowledge of the North European fauna is very important, not only because of its presumed origin in these regions but also because the first taxonomic works to include descriptions of new taxa were based solely on material from this region. The pioneers of Scandinavian and world entomology tended to overlook the tiny tachydromiines. As such, revisional studies have been a primary task of the present author, and as a result of intensive sstudy over several years the individual taxa have been defined and delimited. Altogether 128 species of Tachydromiinae in 9 genera have been found in Denmark and Fennoscandia; a few further species may be expected to occur there but the number will certainly not increase very much. All the species included here are distinguished on the basis of the male genitalia in addition to the external characters, and the more important diagnostic features including the male genitalia are illustrated, most of them for the first time. Each species is very briefly described or differentiated from the most closely related species, and, so far as the limited scope of the fauna allows, brief records on the distribution in Fennoscandia, the entire range of distribution, the flight-period and notes on the biology are given. Species which may also be are often included in the key where they appear without numbering. Klampenborg, Denmark. Aggiungi al carrelloAlthough the tribe Hilarini of the family Empididae is distributed worldwide, the genus Hilara Meigen is mostly Holarctic in distribution. It is the most difficult genus of the family Empididae, as it includes species of a very uniform appearance, lacking distinctive differential morphological features. The epigamic behaviour, swarming of both males and females, with mating in variously shaped small or large aerial aggregations, so characteristic of the Empididae (the dance flies), reached its peak of perfection in the genus Hilara. The prey, the "wedding present", is usually wrapped up in a silken web produced by the silk glands present on the male fore leg. The mating activity is concentrated around water biotopes, often in very characteristic swarms just above water surface, The species-specific epigamic behaviour leads to an effective ethological and genetical isolation, resulting in speciation of morphologically very similar populations. Some 250 Hilara species have been described in the Palaeartic region until now, of these about 200 species are known only in Europe, the undoubtedly best-investigated region. However, even in Europe many species remain still unrecognised, awaiting description. The northern European fauna was fully studied in 2005 (Fauna entomologica scandinavica, vol. 40), with 90 wellrecognised species. The present monograph covers the Mediterranean region from the Canary Islands to the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, and it includes altogether 82 Hilara species, in a generally very different fauna to that of cold and temperate Europe. In all, 31 species are described as new to science in the Mediterranean region, classified into 13 natural groups of species charateristic to western Palaearctic fauna. 138 pp., 196 figs, hardcover gr. 8 [24.6 x 17 cm].

Aggiungi al carrelloThis work is the third of a projected group of six volumes on Empidoidea (Diptera, Brachycera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark, and the first concerning the true Empididae, the dance flies, of the taxonomically difficult genus Empis. In total, 64 species and 11 subgenera are treated, including the faunas of Great Britain and the Netherlands. Each subgenus is briefly characterized, with data on phylogeny, distribution, biology, and number of species. The species are fully described and differential characters are illustrated, including the male genitalia. Data are provided for occurrence and distribution, and epigamic and swarming behaviour are reviewed. The Empididae (Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark will serve not only dipterists, but also taxonomists and museologists. It will also be useful to researchers in ecology, zoogeography, evolutionary biology, agriculture and environmental studies. Leiden. Brill. 192 pp., 310 figs, hardcover gr. 8 [15.7 x 24 cm].

Aggiungi al carrelloThis is the fourth `empidid' volume of the series `Fauna entomologica scandinavica', covering the Scandinavian species of what is undoubtedly the most difficult Palaearctic genus of the family Empididae, the genus Hilara Meigen, 1822. The format of the present volume is the same as in the preceding three volumes. The General part refers only briefly to the morphology of the adults, and is followed by sections on the Classification, Life history (covering feeding habits, epigamic behaviour, phenology), and a section on Zoogeography. All these sections are arranged as in the preceding empidid volumes, including the zoogeography section in which the Scandinavian species are classified into the usual six distributional groups. The main part is the systematic treatment, which also follows the arrangement of the preceding empidid volumes. The `Key to Fennoscandian species' includes several additional species which do not receive a separate treatment in the following systematic part, but they are all given a clear diagnosis in the discussion of the most closely related Scandinavian species. In all, 90 species of Hilara are treated in the present volume, of which 72 have been found to occur in Denmark and Fennoscandia. These further 18 species are included, as they may well occur within the area covered by this series although they have not yet been found there. 233 pp., 418 figs, hardcover gr. 8.
