At the same time it raises the still open, if not insoluble, question of the filiation of the main Balkan versions as well as that of the establishment of definitive texts. This is because the Romanian romance is no more than a relatively accurate translation of and adaptation from a Serbian text, which, in its turn, seems to be an equally faithful adaptation from an original Byzantine model. According to most modern scholars, all the attested texts of the Romanian Alexander romance, both manuscript and printed, go back to one archetype, an anonymous prose translation of the end of the XVlth or the beginning of the XVllth century The prototype of this translation is lost and so is its direct Serbian source, which circulated in the Romanian countries at that time. Following the paradoxical eulogies, such as The Eulogy on Helen, the first political encomium, Evagoras clearly outruns the various traditional forms of the heroic hymn-the epinicion, the lyrical encomium, the scolion or the threnos. The rhetorical encomium implies a sharp distinction between the representation of mythical heroism on the one hand, and contemporary personalities on the other. However, this is not the only difference. Simonides as well sang the virtues of a Scopas and the tyrannicides Harmodios and Aristogeiton were celebrated in a famous Attic scolion. The opposition arises from two specific modes of conception within the more comprehensive contrast between fiction and veridical report. According to Nestles well-chosen formula, the evolution from poetry to prose accompanies the transition from mythology to rationality and the victory of logos over Mythos. The change in outlook operated by this Enlightenment of a Sophistic tinge could be qualified as modernism since the present gets free from and opposed to the patterns of mythic-epic representation. Thucydides chapters of Archeology reveal the superiority of contemporary over mythological time and Euripides characters attest the ardent interest in modern psychological questions. Son floruit a comme limite inférieure 630, date présumée de la diffusion des Etymologies dIsidore qui eut lieu, comme on le sait, dabord en Irlande et en Angleterre et ensuite sur le continent. Or Virgile utilise déjà cette ½uvre. La limite supérieure serait constituée par le floruit de langlo-saxon Aldhelm (fa.709), qui offre une citation presque identique à celle de Virgile: le vers dun certain Glengus.L½uvre de Virgile consiste dabord en quinze Epitoma dont le premier, intitulé De sapientia, commence par parler de principes généraux de philosophie, traitant ensuite de la latinitas, en lespèce des douze genres ou plutôt niveaux dun langage graduellement métaphorique. Le deuxième épitomé, De litteris, traite des différentes significations des lettres. Le troisième traite des syllabes. Le quatrième, intitulé De metrorum compositione, constitue en fait une petite encyclopédie, ou plutôt une parodie de manuel des arts libéraux - les artes philosophie - qui sappellent, chez Virgile: p½ma, rhetoria, gramma, leporia, dialecta, geometria et cetera que non tam emulitatem quam curiositatempretendunt. Thucydides, Xenophon, Isocrates, Aristotle, Plato, Plutarh, Historia Augusta are among the most widely used authorities of the antiquity. The matrix of his system contains Aristotelianism of Platonic emendation, rationalized at the same time in keeping with Thucydidian norms. The ideal personality of the prince is defined as a aurea mediocritas-mesotes of a special nature between basileus and tyrannus, carrying the significance of participation in the two extreme hypostases.
