The introductory essay, The Life and Poetry of George Herbert is by John Nicol (1833-94), Scottish literary academic, who was made Regius Professor of English at the University of Glasgow in 1862. The work is edited by Charles Cowden Clarke (1787-1877), writer on literature and Shakespeare scholar. A reprint of the publisher's first edition of 1863, in a handsome binding.
