Original broadside issued by Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop as part of his second series of rhyme sheets, illustrated by Claud Lovat Fraser. The featured poem is a world-weary lyric by Elizabethan poet Thomas Campion: "Never love unless you can / Bear with all the faults of man." Woolmer notes that the model for the woman at the head of the broadside was the actress Grace Crawford, the artist's wife. Woolmer B2:6. A fine example. Original broadside issued by Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop as part of his second series of rhyme sheets. The broadside pairs Michael Drayton's seventeenth-century sonnet "The Parting" with two vignettes by Claud Lovat Fraser: "Shake hands for ever, cancel all our vows, / And when we meet at any time again, / Be it not seen in either of our brows / That we one jot of former love retain." Woolmer B2:7. A fine example. Single-sided broadside, measuring 14 x 7 inches. Two illustrations printed in black and green.

First Trade edition, Royal 4to., 184 pp., portrait frontispiece and 20 full-page illustrations including 8 in colour, additional vignettes within text, short biography and 'Personal Note' from the author, publisher's cloth-backed illustrated paper-covered boards, a little rubbed and age-toned, corresponding dust-jacket with even wear and professional restorations to upper edge, otherwise internally fine. Claud Lovat Fraser (1890-1921), English artist, designer and author, trained at the Westminster School of Art where his tutors included Walter Sickert and from here he found an influential friend and supporter in the art critic Haldane MacFall. Through MacFall he also gained an introduction to the Actor Manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, proprietor of His Majesty's Theatre in Haymarket. Tree in turn, at MacFall's instigation, commissioned him to supply the illustrations for Thoughts and Afterthoughts, his volume of reminiscences; Fraser became more and more acquainted with the theatre world, marrying the American born actress, Grace Inez Crawford and her career interests contributed to Fraser's increased involvement in theatre and costume design. He saw considerable active service during World War I and it was felt this undermined his long term health and contributed to his early death, aged only 31.
