Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A scarce, late 16th century edition of Prodigious stories extracted from several famous authors, divided into five books, and enriched with nearly 92 beautiful woodcuts. A rather rare and curious work, the collection covers various tales of an admonitory or educative nature, drawn from biblical, classical or other reputable sources, meant to delight and bewilder the reader. Stories of demons, sea monsters, monstrous humans, comets, earthquakes and floods, unnatural and natural phenomena, the works are by Boaistuau, with additional tales by de Tesserant, de Belleforest, and Hoyer. A very rare and curious work. It deals with sea monsters, Siamese twins, thunder entering a girl's mouth and exiting through her private parts, a child born half-man, half-dog, etc. The two volumes added to Boaistuau's are by Claude de Tesserant and François de Belleforest. Many of the woodcuts are truly bizarre in nature, enhancing the impact of each tale and scenes. There are early depictions of Siamese twins, a rather shocking woodcut of a thunder creature entering through the mouth of a woman and out her vagina, monstrous, furred beings of an anthropomorphic nature and much, much more. USTC records 13 existing copies of this edition in libraries. One finely bound volume in 12mo, 720+(8) pages This volume is in very good shape, with a vertical split to the front cover, with some rubbing to the binding as well. The first three leaves bear some minor restorations, and there is some soiling and staining throughout.…

Soft Flex Covers w Cloth Spine. Condizione: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. Modern reprint, no edition stated. Beautiful reprint. 156 pages, soft cover modern facsimile limited edition, flex covers with cloth spine, archival-style replica edition limited to 250 copies. Very good or better condition, clean and unmarked, with only slight bookshop wear from handling and storage. A scarce and unusual modern reprint of the 1582 French edition of Histoires Prodigieuses, a collection of marvelous, strange, sacred, profane, moral, religious, historical, and legendary accounts drawn from Greek and Latin authors and translated into old French by François de Belleforest, with related material associated with Pierre Boaistuau, Claude de Tesserant, and other early compilers. The text is only in old French and is reproduced directly from the early printed source, preserving the look of the original typography, title pages, page layout, marginal notes, woodcut-style device, and period printing character. An intriguing reference for collectors and researchers interested in Renaissance literature, early modern French printing, prodigy books, sacred and profane histories, marvel literature, religious interpretation, astrology, omens, wonders, classical sources, folklore, moral examples, and 16th century European thought. As is true with many reprinted antiquarian works, some smaller text, uneven original printing, faded areas, or page details may be difficult to read in places due to the age, paper quality, small type size, and condition of the original source copy. Overall a clean, sturdy, firmly readable facsimile of a rare early French title, useful for reference, study, collecting, and historical browsing. ~ It would make a great gift for the fan in your life, even if that's you.
