This book is said to have been printed in Sedan. Contemporary full brown speckled sheep binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Red morocco title label. Headcaps and corners skillfully restored. Good copy. Voltaire attributed this violent pamphlet against monastic life to Abbé Du Bellay and made extensive use of it in his Philosophical Dictionary. The author addresses the work to Hermodore, one of the dialoguists of the Secret Conversations. Pithois is said to have compiled writings by Camus, particularly his Response to the Conversations of Hermodore, as seen in the title on p. 1. * (6) 230pp. (2).

Il s'agit plutôt d'une adaptation par le protestant Claude Pithois, qui en fait une satire contre les ordres monastiques. L'édition originale date de 1662 et fut imprimé à Sedan (Cioranescu 55133), (Caillet, 8704, pour l'éd. orig.).

THIRD EDITION. Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary stiff vellum, manuscript spine title. Early attribution inscription on the title. A fine copy. Third edition of this biting satirical biography of the Bishop of Melito, a Jew born in Turkey in the 2nd century CE who converted to Christianity, supposedly compiled by Pithois from the writings of Camus. The text denounces monastic life and monks as lazy, vain, and corrupt, hoarding wealth in the name of false charity and divine intercession. It is written in the form of a missive to Hermodore, the fictional author of the Secret Interviews, another damning critique of the holy orders first published in 1634. This title was placed on the Index in 1681. Rahir 2355; see Dorbon 1982.

Apparently the only surviving copy, not found recorded, of the second (and last) edition of a book devoted to astrolabes, globes, cosmography and geography by the French philosopher Claude Pithois (1587-1676). A two-page foreword addressed "a ceux qui le meritent" notes among other things that the book is useful for people compiling almanacs or writing horoscopes, but does not refer to the earlier edition. A four-page "prelude" in XII numbered points follows, mainly defining terms, then IV numbered treatises: "Traitté de la sphere en general" (on Ptolemaic astrolabes, the earth and the universe: the "sphere artificielle" and "sphere naturelle"), "Traitté de la region celeste" (on the sun, moon, planets and stars, including constellations), "Traitté de la region elementaire" (on the earth, subterranean regions, seas and air, associated with the four elements) and "Traitté des principes de la geographie" (with special emphasis on globes). It is a simple introduction to the subjects, explaining many different terms and concepts. Until now it was known only from the very rare first edition (1641), printed by Pierre Jannon at Sedan. The deliberate destruction of the books of the Protestant Academy at Sedan in 1681 no doubt contributed to the rarity of Sedan books of this period and this one was probably intended for students, who no doubt wore out most copies.With some minor marginal chips, tears and holes, not approaching the text, but otherwise in very good condition and almost entirely untrimmed. The binding is good, with only a few tiny wormholes in the spine. The apparently unique surviving copy of the second and last edition of a work on astrolabes and cosmography, also very rare in its first edition.l Cf.
