"The watercolors of Wilhelm von Kobell made a decisive contribution to the independence of the art genre in Germany because here - unlike in England - watercolor p…ainting played a role in the work of many artists until the end of the 18th century,though often limited to the coloring of drawings. In this sense, Kobell has so far often been in the shadow of Johann Georg von Dillis (1759-1841) within the history of these decades, whom he succeeded as teacher of the landscape class at the Munich Academy of the Arts in 1814. In contrast to Kobell's detailed sheets, the sketchy spontaneous watercolors by Dillis, capturing the special mood of a landscape, have always been evaluated with regard to the future development of plein-air painting and thus as ahead of their time. In fact, atmospheric phenomena in Kobell's ouevre also have a special weight, but with regard to the artificiality of the representation and not, as in Dillis, to convey a living impression of nature." - translated from opening paragraphs.
