Lutyens was the foremost natural talent English architecture ever produced. His buildings were better conceived than Wren's or Adam's, better made than those of Frank Lloyd Wright, an admirer. Long ago, Country Life journalists set him on a pinnacle. Since then, historians and camp-followers of Prince Charles have tried to put him back there.
