One of 500 copies, folio size, pp. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920, at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds, including another renaissance of the printing press as the artist's tool similar to that of Will…iam Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Robert Gibbings, and the artist for this work, Clifford Webb. Clifford Cyril Webb (1895-1972) studied art and is best known today for his wood engravings. He was a founder-member of the Society of Wood Engravers, and "was a prominent figure in the group of engravers whobrought about the revival of wood engraving in the 1920s, and benefited from the encouragement of Robert Gibbings and the Golden Cockerel Press" (n.b., quote from Webb's entry in Horne, "The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators", p. 437). Per the bibliographical entry for this work, "[i]t is surprising that no complete translation of this unique eye-witness account of the First Crusade had ever been published in England before. What the pilgrims did in their fervour of blind fanaticism 'to the glory of God' makes astonishing reading!" ___DESCRIPTION: Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half vellum with orange buckram boards, gilt vignette on the front board of crusaders on horseback by Clifford Webb, top edge gilt, frontis one of five full-page wood-engravings bound in throughout, small title page wood-engraving also of crusaders on horseback, wood-engraving of a cockerel holding a crusader pennant in its beak on p. This is an interesting and pretty book from the Golden Cockerell Press, published early in this noted press's history. It is stunningly illustrated with six black and white engravings by Clifford Webb (1895 - 1972),…the English artist and engraver. Quarter bound in brown Niger leather with gilt titling to spine and cream cloth covers. Some foxing to front cover and light sunning to top of spine. Printed in Caslon's Old Face type on Arnold's handmade paper. A nice copy in very good condition. Measures 6 x 9 inches. 109 pages plus colophon. PRI/111324. Signed.

Number '36' of only 80 specially bound copies signed by both the author and artist to the limitation page. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Full brown morocco binding by S…angorski & Sutcliffe with five raised bands, gilt spine titling and large gilt designs by the artist on the upper and lower covers. Gilt ruled turn-ins. top edge gilt and others uncut. 3 maps by Mina Greenhill and 10 wood engravings by Clifford Webb, 8 full page. Some discolouration and light marking to the outer fore edge of the front board and some light fading to the outer fore edge of the rear cover with a neat previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Loosely inserted is the 4 page publisher's prospectus. The book is protected in loose Mylar archival cover. A very handsome production - 'Clifford Webb's wood engravings seemed to me the finest yet produced by this master of black and white.' (COCKALORUM 181). More images available on request.
