Aggiungi al carrelloBlack and white flyer supporting Clifton DeBerry, Socialist Workers Party candidate for Brooklyn Councilman. The flyer's headline reads "Freedom Now!" and includes an image of DeBarry and an outline of his platform as "the only Negro candidate in Brooklyn." Flyer calls for a nationwide all-Black freedom party for the 1964 electi…on, preferential hiring for "negroes & Puerto Ricans first - till discrimination ends", and unemployment checks at a $2.00 minimum wage. DeBerry began his political career as a civil rights activist and organizer for anti-lynching protests in Chicago. He is remembered for his pro-Union and Trotskyist politics and his anti-Vietnam war stance, as well as his activity in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. DeBerry's campaign for Brooklyn Councilman was his first bid at office. Though the campaign was unsuccessful, DeBerry went on to run for Mayor of New York City, Governor of New York state, and twice for President of the United States in 1964 and 1980 as the candidate for the Socialist Workers Party. He was the first black candidate to be chosen as presidential nominee for an established political party. DeBerry did not win elected office but his campaigns presented a socially progressive alternative to the American two-party system and kept socialist politics in the national conversation at a time when the United States at the height of anti-leftist Cold War sentiment. Very good condition.
