Focusing on the deterioration of leather over the years, this report is divided into two sections: one giving a report on libraries and bookbinding and the other on preparation of leathers for bookbinding. The appendices provide hints to owners and keepers of libraries, thoughts on the fading of colors from leather, etc. Quarto: x, 120, [2] pp. with 11 tipped-in color plates and black-and-white textual illustrations. In addition, 12 leather samples are mounted on the front and rear pastedowns. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt-stamped borders and titling. The boards are a bit rubbed along the extremities, largely at the corners and tips, with a few faint smudges; otherwise very good.

Some rubbing to spine and slightly coxed, offsetting from leather samples to first and last free endpaper, some pencil underlining and annotation internally, previous ownership inscription to first free endpaper rubbed out, ownership inscription in ink to second free endpaper. A fine association copy, from the library of Christopher Clarkson, who "transformed traditional approaches to the repair of medieval manuscripts and early printed books and worked to raise awareness of their importance as historical artefacts" (Nicholas Pickwoad).
