The bindings have gilt lines and title labels to spines and marbled boards. There is general rubbing to surfaces and edges with fraying and small loss of leather at spine ends and corners and some paper loss at the edges. The spine joints have wear and there is some splitting at the front spine joint of Vol I at the bottom although the bindings are currently sound. Corners with some turning with a bump to the top back corner of Vol II. The title label of Vol II has small loss at the top. Contents: Vol I: pencil inscription to fep; sixpenny stamp from reign of Edward VII (1901-1910) at the top of initial blank; frontispiece; title; dedication 2pp; preface 2pp; contents pp iv-xv; folding map; text pp 1-524; final blank. Both volumes have general marking and spotting particularly in the margins. This is more pronounced in Vol I. The map has an old repair at the attachment. There is some staining to the rear endpapers of Vol II and a small tear at the bottom edge of the rear free endpaper.

Full nineteenth-century polished calf, gilt-decorated spines, gilt-lettered leather labels. Top inch of rear hinge cracked on volume II. Lacking half-title in volume I. Light offsetting to titles from frontispieces and light offsetting to folding map, else a fine and clean set throughout with virtually no foxing. Captain Cochrane of the Royal Navy arrived in Colombia in 1823 in an attempt to help the natives reduce the number of casualties among divers in the pearl fishery industry. His journal provides an extensive and thorough study of the cities, citizens, customs, natural history, resources, etc. of the country. The work is highlighted by the two handsome plates which include a hand-colored engraving of "The Author in the Travelling Costume of the Country" and a hand-colored aquatint of a "Precipitous Descent of a Cordillera of the Andes in the Province of Choco." The large folding map of Colombia is extremely detailed and was engraved by Sidney Hall specifically for this work. Book.
