Its scenic attractions and biological importance have been recognised by Tanzania's tourism master plan and national wildlife policy. At present, Mkomazi's future is uncertain. To maintain its local, national and international value, it must find ways to accommodate the needs of a rapidly expanding human population with its remarkable flora and fauna. Until now there has been little research on Mkomazi's basic ecology. Starting in 1992, the Tanzanian Department of Wildlife and the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) undertook a five-year study of the Reserve.
