En réunissant sous un thème unificateur des artistes aussi divers que Watteau, Chardin, Boucher, Greuze et Fragonard, ce beau livre nous permet de poser un regard neuf sur les liens qui les unissent. Ces uvres regroupées pour la première fois susciteront une conscience nouvelle et une vision élargie de l'importance de la peinture de genre dans l'évolution de la peinture française au XVIIe siècle. Au XVIIIe siècle, l'Académie attribuait une place moins importante à la peinture de genre, ce qui n'empêcha pas les sujets empruntés à la vie quotidienne de séduire certains des artistes les plus originaux et les plus doués de l'Ancien Régime. Les historiens de l'art ont souvent souligné la vitalité des genres mineurs, certains affirmant même que les genres les plus valorisés en peinture, soit les sujets tirés de la mythologie, de la Bible et de l'histoire nationale, n'avaient pas su inspirer aux peintres un uvre aussi attachant et d'une aussi belle et constante qualité. Le fait que tous les artistes peintres aient reçu leur formation à l'Académie ou aient été contraints de s'y faire admettre mène à un paradoxe : les meilleurs fruits produits par les préceptes et l'apprentissage académiques pourraient se retrouver dans les catégories qui ont été le plus décriées par le système hiérarchique en vigueur au XVIIIe siècle. Bien que Watteau, Oudry, Chardin et Fragonard fussent tenus en haute estime en leur temps, et le soient encore de nos jours (Greuze, pour sa part, fut tour à tour encensé et éreinté par la critique), ils ne suscitèrent en général qu'un intérêt monographique en histoire de l'art ou dans les expositions. De plus, les exégètes situèrent rarement dans ce contexte élargi les peintres d'histoire ayant aussi signé des chefs-d'uvre de la peinture de genre. Nous pensons ici à Boucher, mais également à Jean-François de Troy, Carle Van Loo et Noël Hallé. Quant aux peintres qui s'étaient cantonnés dans les tableaux de genre, comme Lancret et Boilly, ils n'ont droit que depuis peu à une relecture savante.».
