Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Very Good. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY + ALS. 8vo, incl. frontis caricature. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Leading and bottom edges untrimmed. Pushing to spine ends. Affectionately inscribed over four lines in French by Scarfe to Gabrielle Cassel in black-brown ink to ffep, signing off: "A…vec mes meilleures amities pour La Belle Gaby," and inscribed above in a different hand and green ink: "Cassel. Collas". Two-line ALS in brown ink, addressed to "J. P. Collas, with best wishes, Francis Scarfe. Dec. 1940" laid in: toned, scattered spotting. Toned, scattered spotting, spine starting in a few places, but binding firm. Else, clean. In the original blue typographical dust jacket: spine darkened, rubbed and creased, shallow nicking to spine ends and top corner of front wrapper. Very good/ very good A charming first edition presentation copy of Scarfe's first poetry collection, playfully inscribed in the year of publication to Gabrielle Cassel: "Va, Bouquin, chez Gabrielle, Esprit fervers sans analogue [.] Elle est quasi-fleilologue," and also, via the briefest ALS, her husband the philologist of Anglo-Norman, J. P. Collas: "Go, book, to Collas, and without apology add more Romance to his Philology. F. S."; Scarfe's poem (published here), 'Precious Being, Being Precious, Seven Variations on a Theme, For J. C.,' is dedicated to J. P. Collas. Perhaps best known for his pioneering 1942 critical study Auden and After (published just two years after this collection), Francis Scarfe was a British administrator, critic, novelist, poet, scholar and translator. For many years he was Senior Lecturer in French at the University of Glasgow and then served as Director of the British Institute in Paris for two decades. His translated La Fontaine, Tristan Tzara, Paul Valéry, and others, but it was his translations of Baudelaire that "brought him lasting public recognition". This collection includes translations from Nerval, Mallarmé and Queneau, as well as a poem for Paul Éluard and a memorial to A. E. Housman (who had died in 1936). J. P. Collas (1911-1984) was a British philologist, deemed "the principal Anglo-Norman scholar of the day" and "one of the leading philologists of his generation." From 1937-46 he taught at the University of Glasgow, presumably where he met Francis Scarfe. Both men were conscientious objectors during WWII, when this collection was both issued and inscribed.
