Prima edizione Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition (McCelland, Stewart, SD, NAP). Signed and Inscribed by the Author and poet on the second page (a page with a poem titled Preface) before the title page. Opposite the title page is a frontispiece photograph of Arthur Wentworth Hamilton Eaton in excellent condition. It is protected by a tissue guard which is in excellent condition. I could continue in this vein as the title page is also in excellent condition as are all the pages (239) in the book. They are all very clean (in fact I didn't see any soiling on any page). There are no markings. No one has written anything brilliant in the margin of a page or seen fit to scribble their own name on an early page. There is no writing anywhere in the book (with the exception of the author's signed inscription, which is a good thing). There are no creases. The top page edge is gilt, all three page edges are very clean. Further good news. This 86-year-old book is very solidly bound, absolutely no issues in that regard. I've provided photographs of the covers. They may pick up some very light dust spotting/or fading on the front cover. It's there and not there depending on your angle of vision and the way the light hits it. The gilt lettering on the front is still very bright, on the spine it is quite faded but can be read up close. The back cover looks nearly perfect, a couple of tiny surface scratches. This book, outside and inside, has been taken very good care of. There's a minimum of wear on the covers, a crease at the bottom of the spine, a tiny black spot near the bottom edge of the front. That's about it. Even the corners look great. Included with the book are two items from McCelland, Stewart & Company. The first is a four page leaflet that discusses the poet and book, and contains one page from the poet himself discussing the poems in the book. The back page is an Order Form. The second item is a paper that lists the other works by the author. "Mr. Eaton's 'Acadian Legends' are characterized by melody, pathos, a strong feeling for nature, and refined taste. The spirit of Evangeline's country has been absorbed by the poet, who celebrates the Gaspereau and all the region round about with a tender melancholy fitted to the scene and its associations. He has caught the old world atmosphere which surrounds and mellows that beautiful land, and has given to his verse a softness and repose which are in perfect keeping with the subject". 'New York Tribune.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
