"As director of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Warren allowed William Thomas Green Morton to perform his celebrated demonstration on the use of ether in surgery. Warren performed the operation (a surgical excision) while Morton served as anesthetist. Warren's support of the new development was in large part responsible for its subsequent worldwide acceptance. In this fascinating booklet, Warren gives a firsthand description of the early use of ether in surgery, including a detailed account of the famous operation mentioned above" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1345). Many of the preparations used by the senior Dr. Warren in his lectures were the work of his hands, and we have been informed that some of the best specimens in the Cabinet of the Boston Society of Natural History were prepared by him.
