Condizione: New. 2009 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1893). SB. 471 pp + BW Illustrations, maps and plans At a time when the abduction and kidnapping of westerners in Islamic countries is, sadly, an everyday occurrence, this book has an extremely topical interest. It is the memoirs of an Austrian Catholic missionary - Father Joseph Ohrwalder - who was abducted by followers of the Mahdi, the Muslim leader who led an Islamic revolt against British rule in the Sudan. Ohrwalder's ordeal lasted for ten years, but he managed to escape his captors after a decade in their hands, and, after a desperate ride across the desert, got clean away. He wrote an account in German of his often tragic experiences at the suggestion of Colonel Sir Francis Wingate, the officer who debriefed him after his ordeal. Wingate then translated the book into English for its first publication. As well as his own experiences, Ohrwalder gives an inside view of the rise and fall of the Mahdi - and of such events as the siege of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon. A horrific yet thrilling book. Book.…

The two men were brothers and have co-written this account of the Relief of Chitral. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. viii, 232 pages, illustrated. The plates and sketches are all present, but the page numbering confusing. The sketches often match the page number rather than the page they are supposed to be facing. The map of the Chitral expedition is supposed to face page x, except there is no page x, the numbering stops at viii. The Contents suggests there are no pages missing, though page viii and the map are tightly glued together, so this could be a printer's fault. One plate is loose, that of Lieut. H.K. Harley, else a clean, unmarked and solid copy. "The Chitral Expedition was a military expedition in 1895 sent by the British authorities to relieve the fort at Chitral which was under siege after a local coup. After the death of the old ruler power changed hands several times. An intervening British force of about 400 men was besieged in the fort until it was relieved by two expeditions, a small one from Gilgit and a larger one from Peshawar." (Wikipedia).…

Offered together are two versions of this key Treaty, one prior to ratification (Cmd. 3627, 1930), the other ratified in Baghdad on 26 Jan 1931 (Cmd. 3797, 1931) with additional Notes. Self-wraps 15x25cm, 11, 16pp English text. Very good with small Admiralty ink stamp (dated 17 Mar 1931) to the front of the ratified version. The Treaty was signed by Iraqi Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Noury (Nuri) Said for King Faisal, and High Commissioner F.H. Humphrys for King George V. It opens by reasserting Britain's commitment to help Iraq's admission into the League of Nations, thereby bringing the 25 year Mandate to an earlier close. The terms commit to perpetual peace; diplomatic representation; the settlement of disputes etc. Though the main thrust of the agreement is to grant the British use of Iraqi rail, rivers, ports, aerodromes and means of communication in the event of war; and for the British to establish airbases at Basra and elsewhere to help defend Iraq against external threats. Annexures elaborate on this, addressing the strength of British forces at Hinaidi and Mosul; their freedom from taxation; Iraqi provision of special guards for the airbases; British provision of training, officers, and materiel; Iraqi provision of facilities for the movement of British forces and arms, etc. The ratified version includes additional 4pp "Notes exchanged with the Iraq Prime Minister embodying the separate agreement on financial questions referred to in the second exchange of Notes appended to the Anglo-Iraq Treaty of 30th June, 1930" dated 19 Aug 1930.…

Aggiungi al carrelloAn excellent document, providing an invaluable view of the practicalities of commissioning and executing public monuments in the Georgian period. See Chantrey's entry in the Oxford DNB, and Cunningham's, which states: 'In 1814 he was engaged by Chantrey as superintendent of his establishment, and gave up writing for newspapers. He lived afterwards at 27 Lower Belgrave Place, Pimlico. He acted as Chantrey's secretary, conducted his correspondence, represented him during his absence, and occasionally offered artistic assistance. He became a favourite of Chantrey's sitters and visitors. This employment lasted until Chantrey's death in 1841 when Cunningham was left an annuity of £100.' Both letters are on the same 4to bifolium, with Cunningham's letter (signing as Chantrey) to Tindal covering the recto of the first leaf, and Tindal's letter to Mrs Page covering the recto of the second leaf and continuing to the reverse, which also carries the address to 'Mrs. Page / Speen / Newbury', and a red wax seal and postmark. ONE: Cunningham (signing as 'F Chantrey') to Tindal, 7 January 1836. Cunningham's hand is distinctive, and there is no question that he has written the letter of nineteen lines, addressed to '- Tindal Esqr.' The first paragraph reads: 'Mr. Cunningham having informed me of the particulars respecting the designs for the monument to Colonel Page I beg to inform you that about forty guineas would be a fair price to pay for any one of them executed in the usual way adopted by marble masons, viz: out of slabs of an inch or an inch and quarter thick and composed of many pieces joined together with cramps of copper. But if the whole be cut out of one entire block of marble about six inches thick and of good quality the cost will be from one hundred to one hundred and twenty pounds. Both these calculations are exclusive of the Inscription which is very long and will be paid for at the rate of one pound to a hundred letters.' The second paragraph is slightly shorter, with the suggestion that the matter be placed 'in the hands of my neighbour Mr. Theakstone of 4 Lower Belgrave Place whom I constantly employ as my best carver'. TWO: 'Wm. Tindal' to 'Mrs Page'. Thirty-eight lines. He begins by reporting that 'Mr Crosby' has seen Theakstone in Chantrey's studio, 'at work there on a statue of Bishop Heber - You may conclude therefore that he is an excellent workman'. He explains that if Theakstone is employed, Chantrey will continue to superintend the project, though Chantrey 'means you to understand that he does not like putting his own name to anything but proper sculpture'. He proceeds to discuss the 'practical point of execution', from whether to use grey or black marble, to the construction of the base.…
