Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 4-X-6 inch (10-X-15.5 cm.) ring-bound booklet in black leather (faux leather?) covers circa April, 1943. Interior pages lovely, outer cover "good only." Wilow Run, near Ypsilanti, site of farms where Henry Ford sent delinquent city boys he believed would prosper in a rural environment, became the site of a huge war plant in 1941, initially to manufacture parts for the unwieldy B-24 Liberator bomber, but soon converted to assembly of complete aircraft. Ford had long paid wages so high that his critics constantly warned he must soon go bankrupt, explaining he wanted his workers to be able to buy his cars, but also doubtless because he was adamantly opposed to giving up a share of his management prerogatives to the labor unions. Thus, how the UAW-CIO came to unionize his bomber plant by 1943 makes an interesting tale. (Historian Alwyn Lloyd, in his book about the "Liberator," reports Willow Run, initially set up much like an automobile assembly line, was beset with labor difficulties, high absentee rates, rapid employee turnover, even a massive strike.) But somehow, by August 1944 Willow Run was producing more than 400 B-24s a month -- eventually, working two 9-hour shifts, Willow Run produced 6,972 of a total of 18,482 B-24s built -- plus components for 1,893 more to be assembled elsewhere (though most pilots still preferred the easier-to-handle but lower-capacity B-17.) The hourly wages here generally run $1.10 to $1.40, though cleaners and rubbish handlers were paid 95 cents an hour, while power linemen could make $1.20 to $1.50, machinists and machine repairmen as much as $1.30 to $1.70 -- a strangely flat scale. Grievance procedures are also outlined. 58 pp., reduced from $25.

Seen in perspective. -- `The following document was originally prepared, in response to a request, in the early autumn of 1962 for the information of Bible Society Secretaries. It is a follow-up to a first study (Bulletin of the United Bible Societies, No. 34, 1958), which gave a quick historical sketch and some current illustrations of the biblical movement in the Roman Catholic Church. The material, though by no means exhaustive, proved very abundant, while certain of the discussions at the Vatican Council II last autumn served to enhance its significance. Its publication in booklet form was therefore suggested.' (p. 7) VG in orig. illus. yellow on gray wrapper.
