Véritable rupture dans la pensée militaire, ses écrits se situent à l'origine d'un art opér…ationnel qui, sous des modalités nouvelles, est toujours en uvre aujourd'hui. Pour reprendre l'expression consacrée, Guibert est le théoricien de la grande " révolution dans les affaires militaires " de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, celle qui a conduit au " système de guerre moderne " prévalant encore malgré l'évolution des technologies. Héritier direct de Frédéric le Grand, Guibert prône un " principe divisionnaire " beaucoup plus riche que ce que l'histoire militaire récente en a fait. Promoteur de la manuvre et de la guerre de mouvement, il plaide pour la simplification et l'homogénéité des structures qui conduisent à la création de modules de forces interarmes, modifiables et interchangeables, capables de se déplacer de manière autonome puis d'être engagés avec souplesse, isolément ou regroupés. Il conçoit une manuvre² supposant une reconfiguration permanente de la disposition de ses différents constituants ; il invente un système de forces qui agiraient dans leur ensemble mais seraient constamment capables de se concentrer ou de s'étendre, de modifier leur organisation. Rejetant les règles fixes, il se fait l'avocat persuasif de la seule règle qui vaille à la guerre, celle de l'adaptation aux circonstances. Guibert est parfaitement contemporain : ses enseignements retrouvent même une modernité renouvelée par l'espace redonné à la manuvre. Il faut donc relire son Essai général de tactique, parce qu'il constitue un tournant fondamental dans la pensée militaire et se situe véritablement à la source de la modernité opérationnelle. .
