Rare première édition collective tirée à petit nombre et non mise dans le commerce - établie par Antoine-Marie Roederer, fils de l'auteur.Né à Metz en 1754, Roederer joua un rôle politique majeur de la Révolution jusqu'à sa mort en 1835. Élu aux États-Généraux,…puis procureur-syndic du département de la Seine, il accompagne à ce titre Louis XVI des Tuileries à l'Assemblée Nationale le 10 août 1792. Inquiété durant la Terreur, il joue un rôle modérateur sous le Directoire grâce à deux organes de presse, le Journal de Paris et La Décade. Il soutient activement le coup d'état du 18 brumaire et connaît ainsi une accéleration de sa carrière politique : Président de la section de l'intérieur au Conseil d'État, sénateur, ministre des Finances de Joseph Bonaparte à Naples, ministre secrétaire d'État du Grand-Duché de Berg (1810). A été relié à la suite l'article complet (11 x 18) "Roederer" paru dans les "Causeries du Lundi" de Sainte-Beuve, des 18 juillet, 25 juillet et 1er août 1853. Plus qu'un journal, ce sont des notes écrites au jour le jour par Roederer de1799 à 1806, essentielles pour comprendre notamment la politique consulaire et la personnalité de Bonaparte. Elégante reliure, couverture conservée mais restaurée, manque en coin supérieur de la table des noms sans conséquence. Cet Avocat et conseiller au parlement de Metz, fut député aux Etats Généraux, puis ministre des Finances de Joseph Bonaparte à Naples en 1806, et conseiller d'État et sénateur sous l'Empire.… Ami des philosophes et professeur d'économie politique, il rédigea cette histoire de l'hôtel de Rambouillet sous le titre de "Mémoire pour servir l'histoire de la société polie en France". C'est une histoire de la bonne société du XVIIe siècle. Selon lui Mme de Rambouillet aurait refondé la société polie en France. Ce livre eut une influence considérable, en particulier auprès de Sainte-Beuve et Victor Cousin, car il remettait le XVIIe siècle à l'honneur, et montrait l'importance sociale de la conversation et le rôle qui jouent les femmes. A handsome set of the works of Roederer (1754-1835), prominent French politician during the Revolution and first French Republic. This set was owned and custom bound for Yves Marsaudon (1899-1985), with his bookplate to front pastedowns and his gilt initials at foot of spines; a prominent freemason, Marsaudon converted from Cath…olicism to the Orthodox Church, and published books purporting freemason roots in Templar and Rosicrucian orders. 8 vols, large octavo (262 x 176 mm). Mid 20th-century brown quarter calf, twin brown morocco labels, marbled sides, top edges speckled brown, others uncut. Original blue wrappers bound in. Bookseller label of Libraire Raymond Clavreuil to front pastedown of vol. I. Short split at head of front joint of vol. III, and at head of spine of vol. VII, contents with some sporadic light foxing else generally clean. An excellent set.

"Né à Metz, en 1754, Pierre-Louis Roederer est un des hommes-clés de la fin de l'Ancien Régime et des débuts de la Révolution. Élu à l'Assemblée Nationale, il en deviendra une des voix les plus écoutées. Sa carrière est multiforme: juriste, économiste, théoricien politique, homme d'action successivement procureur général syndic de la Seine, propriétaire de journaux, conspirateur de Brumaire, conseiller d'Etat, sénateur, comte d'Empire, ministre napolitain, secrétaire d'Etat du Grand-Duché de Berg, pair de France sous la monarchie de Juillet, mais aussi auteur de théâtre, moraliste, philosophe et économiste.
