All first editions.Signed to pp.11 to "Surry Affair" by the author. A collection of six very scarce public letters on the law, bound into one volume. This work contains; "A Surry Affair" [1800], written anonymously by Robert Dickenson, in which Dickenson defends his actions at a hunt against the accusations of Mr. Allen. "Mr Trist"s Statement to the Public" [1812], being a letter to the public from a Mr Trist defending himself against the accusations that he was involved in the 1812 race horse poisoning. In this defence, Trist discusses the testimony of Cecil Bishop, where he named the author, alongside Daniel Dawson who was later convicted and executed for the crime. "A Letter to William Garrow, Esq. In Which the Conduct of Counsel in the Cross-Examination of Witnesses and Commenting on Their Testimony, is Fully Discussed, and the Licentiousness of the Bar Exposed" by Thomas Hague, [1808]. In this work, Hague expresses his displeasure in the conduct that the counsel showed when doing their cross-examination of witnesses, addressing the letter to Mr William Garrow, a noted English barrister and judge known for pioneering the phrase" presumed innocent until proven guilty". Another letter to Mr William Garrow titled "A Letter to William Garrow, Esq, on the Subject of His Liberal Behaviour to the Author on the Trial of a Cause (Ford Against Pedder, and Others,) At the Lent Assizes, 1796, Held at Kingston, in the County of Sussex with an Apology for Its Publication to Sir Beaumont Hotham, Knt. Concanen was Irish and initially praised Pope and Swift in his collection of poems published in 1722, but within a few years he was supporting the Whigs and attacked them, earning ridicule in The Dunciad and in Swift s On Poetry: A Rhapsody. The present miscellany contains six poems identified as by Concanen himself and others by a variety of authors including Patrick Delany, Philip Frowde, David Mallet, Thomas Newcomb, Ambrose Philips, and Allan Ramsay. There are several by women, including "Verses to the Memory of Mrs. Oldfield" by "Mrs. Heron." First edition, written after the Excise Crisis earlier that year, which was the first major parliamentary crisis Sir Robert Walpole's ministry faced in the House of Commons. To subsidize a reduction in land tax, Walpole proposed substituting excise duties for customs duties on tobacco and wine. After the Excise Bill was withdrawn, Concanen published this defence of Walpole's policy. Matthew Concanen (1701-1749) was an Irish poet, playwright, and political writer. He "quickly established a reputation as a political pamphleteer, and contributed to papers such as the Daily Courant, the London Journal, and the British Journal" (DIB). Concanen's literary efforts on behalf of the Whig government had been rewarded in 1732 with his appointment to attorney general of Jamaica. ESTC T63487.
