Originally issued by Bruno Cassirer (Oxford) in 1951 and reissued here as the first Harper Torchbook edition (1959), this compact volume distills two millennia of Buddhist thought into under 200 pages of lucid, scholarly prose. Conze traces the evolution of Buddhism from its Indian beginnings through Mahayana and Zen, explaining central doctrines such as Nirvana, Dharma, and Sunyata (emptiness) with intellectual rigor and literary grace. The preface by Arthur Waley hails it as 'so comprehensive, and at the same time so easy and readable, an account of Buddhism as to be found in any language.' This Torchbook issue, TB 58, was printed in the United States and features a striking cover design by Alex Tsao. This copy is Very Good, clean and tight in original pictorial wraps with only light edgewear, faint rubbing near the spine, and mild age toning to pages consistent with 1950s production. Textblock is unmarked and binding firm. Price ($1.35) printed on front cover. Library of Congress catalog card number 59-10345 noted on copyright page; reprinted by arrangement with Bruno Cassirer Ltd. (Oxford). A solid, attractive example of one of the most influential Western introductions to Buddhist philosophy. Edward Conze (1904-1979) was a German-born British scholar whose translations and analyses of Prajnaparamita and Mahayana texts remain foundational in Western Buddhist studies. His works bridged rigorous philology and accessible philosophy, shaping generations of Buddhist scholarship.
