Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Size: Sheet 32 x 48.5 cm, platemark (both prints) 21.5 x 38 cm, Frontispiece image 13.5 x 17.5 cm, Tailpiece image approx. 13 x 12 cm Condition: Very good condition, an excellent impression on wove paper In 1761 a group of artists, including Hogarth, set up as the Society of Artists and exhibited their paintings in Charing Cross, London. The group was set up in protest at the organisation of an exhibition the previous year by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce. Hogarth designed this frontispiece and tailpiece for the catalogue. The illustrations were originally engraved by Charles Grignion, but this print is from copper plates engraved (very close indeed to the originals) later, probably by Thomas Cook c1800. Both images are engraved on a single plate, unlike the originals. We believe that the original Grignion plates no longer exist, and this engraving was used as a substitute in early 19th century editions. This impression is from the 1835-1837 edition published in parts by Baldwin Cradock & Joy. The Hogarth designs are listed as 236 and 237 in Paulson's catalogue Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989, where a full description and other details can be found.…

Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Size: Print inside mount 55 x 44 cm (22 x 17 inches approx) Condition: Print in excellent condition, mount new. This print was engraved by Thomas Cook in c1803, after a painting which William Hogarth painted in 1728. The original painting is lost, but other versions painted by Hogarth are in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge and the National Portrait Gallery. Although the print was first published in 1803, this impression is slightly later, probably about 1822 from the collection of Hogarth's original works published by Baldwin Cradock and Joy. Thomas Bambridge was the Warden of the Fleet Prison in 1728, and following complaints about the state of the prison, a Committee of the House of Commons examined Bambridge at the Fleet prison several times. Subsequently Bambridge was tried and acquitted of the murder of one of the prison inmates. The full title of this print is "BAMBRIDGE ON TRIAL FOR MURDER BY A COMMITTEE OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS|Engraved by T Cook from an Original Painting by Wm. Hogarth in the possession of Mr. Ray. Published June 1st. 1803, by G. & J. Robinson, Paternoster Row, London." The title is inaccurate however, because the painting actually shows the earlier examination of Bambridge at the prison, not his trial. Hogarth, only 31 years old and still at the start of his career in 1728, was deeply affected by the scandal of conditions at the Fleet prison, his own father having been an inmate there. His painting shows deep emotion which is captured admirably by Cook. On the left can be seen the figure of Bambridge, squirming while various dreadful instruments are demonstrated to the Committee. The painting is also clearly of great historical value for the portraiture of the Committee members. Thomas Cook was a remarkable engraver, best known for having copied the complete engraved work of Hogarth, to which he devoted the years 17951803, and which was published in 1806 under the title of Hogarth Restored. This is a very valuable collection, as many of Hogarth's prints were of great rarity, and had not been made public before.…

Aggiungi al carrelloSize: 253 x 180mm. Some foxing to margins. Line engraving after a portrait by William Hogarth (1697-1764), originally engraved by James Basire (1730-1802). Morell is depicted half-length seated at a table, facing left, wearing a partly buttoned jacket, cravat and wide-brimmed hat. On the table are four books, sheets of paper (one with 'Aet. 60', the other with 'THESARUS') and an ink pot; Morell is about to use his right hand to write with a quill. He is seated on a chair, a curtain is draped from the top centre to behind the chair and in the top left corner are some organ pipes. From behind the curtain appears a coat of arms and below that a medal on a thread hangs from the wall. The letters after Morell's name refer to his Professorship of Sacred Theology and to being Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries. Hogarth's original drawing of 1762 is in the Horne Collection in Florence.…

Aggiungi al carrellohardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Publication: London, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1876 Formatting: 8vo, 2 Volumes, pp. [xi], 475; [viii], 485. Condition Report: Very Good. The two-volume set remains structurally sound, firmly bound with tight, secure hinges. The full calf leather boards exhibit expected cosmetic shelf-wear for their age, including shallow surface scuffing, minor darkening, and a few light scratches, but present no deep abrasions, corner bumping, or structural splitting. The gilt tooling to the outer borders and the spine, featuring raised bands and dual contrasting Morocco labels, remains notably bright, well-defined, and unoxidised. Internally, the volumes are in excellent condition. The elaborate marbled endpapers and inner gilt dentelles are vibrant and well-preserved. The text blocks are bright, largely free from foxing, and remain entirely unmarked save for the previous owner's distinguished signature. Catalogue Note: A handsome first edition set of George Otto Trevelyanâs celebrated biography of his uncle, Lord Macaulay. Volume I features a fine engraved frontispiece portrait of Macaulay by C. Cook, taken from a photograph by Claudet, complete with a facsimile signature in the margin. The set boasts a premium full-calf binding executed by MacLehose of Glasgow (James MacLehose), the esteemed bookseller and publisher to the University of Glasgow, recognized for their high-quality craftsmanship in the 19th and early 20th centuries. While first editions of this work are relatively obtainable on the open market, they are scarcely found in such a bright, robust fine binding. Of particular note is the rich historical provenance of this specific copy. The upper margins of both volumes bear the sweeping ink signature of "Walter Macfarlane / The Saracen Foundry." Walter Macfarlane (1817â"1885) was one of Scotland's most significant industrialists, founding the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow. His firm became world-renowned for its architectural and decorative cast ironwork, exporting elaborate fountains, bandstands, and structural iron across the British Empire. This regional connection between the Glasgow bindery and a prominent Glasgow industrial titan makes this set a highly unique artifact of Scottish industrial-era heritage. First published in 1876, The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay is widely regarded as one of the finest literary biographies of the Victorian era. Written by his nephew, the historian and politician George Otto Trevelyan, the work provides an intimate and comprehensive portrait of Thomas Babington Macaulayâ"the quintessential Whig historian, poet, and statesman. By skillfully weaving Macaulayâs own prolific correspondence and private journals with a perceptive narrative, Trevelyan grants readers an unparalleled window into the intellectual and political life of 19th-century Britain. It stands as both a masterclass in biographical writing and a vital historical record. C. Cook (Engraver) (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloFor information on Cook see his biography in the Oxford DNB, which points out that the subtlety of his later fiction was lost on his contemporaries, being written in a style that 'was not sufficiently sensational' for the period. The present item is the complete text of the last thing Cook ever wrote: a story which appeared in the weeks following his death, in Hood's Comic Annual for 1884 (London, 1883). On 3 November 1883, the 'Bookseller' quoted the review of the volume in the magazine 'Fun': 'a melancholy interest attaches to the article "Columbines all of a Row," from the fact that it was the last production of the late Mr. Dutton Cook, having been completed only a few days before his death'. The Graphic praised the story's 'charming intermingling of pathos and humour'. 12pp, landscape 12mo. The holograph is written in a close, stylized hand, in purple ink, on twelve 11.5 x 18 cm leaves attached with a brass stud. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed in autograph at top-right of first page: 'Dutton Cook / 69 Gloucester Crescent. N.W', and signed at end 'Dutton Cook'. With autograph emendations throughout, but evidently a final draft: the tenth and eleventh leaves have both been divided into two parts with neat vertical cutting, and reunited on the reverse with paper labels, with the section created by this division indicated by numbering in another hand in pencil in the margins. The story is divided by Cook into nine parts with roman numerals.…

Bidloo had already published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam in 1685; the illustrations were based on drawings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). Sales, however, were apparently quite slow, and much to Bidloo's displeasure, Cowper (1666-1709) acquired 300 complete sets of the plates from the publisher. He published these, along with a new text, under a new title and under his own name. Two original black-and-white engravings on one leaf of white paper, Hudibras Vanquish'd by Trussa (Plate 5) and Hudibras in Tribulation (Plate 6). This print is likely disbound from a publication. Leaf measures 16 1/2" x 22 1/2." Each printed area (plate) measures 13" x 9." The print is very clean and intact except for age toning, a few faint dampstains, and a small chip in the lower-right corner not affecting text. A Very Good copy. Two original engravings on one sheet of paper designed by William Hogarth and engraved by Thomas Cook. The following text credits the artists and is printed below each engraving: "Design'd by W. Hogarth" and "Engrav'd by T. Cook." Publisher's information printed in bottom margin: "London, Published by G. & J. Robinson, Pater noster Row, April 1st, 1802." These engravings are reproductions engraved by Cook and modeled after the original designs of Hogarth. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English printmaker, painter, satirist, cartoonist, and social critic. Thomas Cook (1744/45-1818) was an English printmaker. Cook is perhaps best-known for his reproductions of Hogarth's works, which were first compiled and published as Hogarth Restored in 1806. The subjects of these prints are scenes from Samuel Butler's satirical poem, Hudibras. The poem was published in three parts as The First Part (1663), The Second Part (1664), and The Third and Last Part (1678). The poem takes place during the final years of the Interregnum, about 1658-1660, and is about the titular Hudibras, a knight and colonel of the Parliamentary New Model Army, and his squire, Ralpho. Throughout the poem, Hudibras and Ralpho are comically defeated on a regular basis, often at the hands of witty or courageous women. Each engraving includes parts of the poem corresponding to the scene. These two scenes are from The First Part of the poem, in which Hudibras and Ralpho venture out on a chivalrous quest. After trying to stop a round of local bear-baiting, Hudibras and Ralpho are overtaken by the townspeople. Hudibras is summarily humiliated when the local prostitute, Trussa (or Trulla), defeats him, stands on top of him, and requests that Crowdero, the town fiddler, be released from prison and have his fiddle and instrument case returned to him. The top plate, Plate 5, shows Hudibras's defeat by Trussa. The scene also depicts Trussa's role as Hudibras's protector as she fends off angry villagers with various weapons. After subduing Hudibras, Trussa locks both him and Ralpho in the village stocks to await an imminent flogging. However, Plate 6 shows what happens next, a rich widow frees an embarrassed Hudibras and Ralpho but under one final humiliating stipulation, that Hudibras must flog himself afterward. Hudibras and Ralpho represent the hypocrisy and ignorance Butler saw in the English Puritan leaders of the seventeenth century while the townspeople, including Trussa and Crowdero, represent virtue and the interests of the public.…

Each engraving includes an accompanying part of the poem. "The Committee" (Plate 9) takes a brief hiatus from the narrative of Hudibras to satirize Oliver Cromwell and the Rump Parliament, which was formed from the "rump" (remnants) of the Long Parliament of 1640-1648. The Rump Parliament was installed as a way to depose King Charles I after the Long Parliament had chosen to restore Charles I and limit the power of the New Model Army commanded by Cromwell. The Rump Parliament was essentially controlled by the New Model Army to forward its agenda. The eponymous "Committee" in the print is a group of Puritan Saints who respond to the removal of King Charles I by mulling over unrealistic options to replace the monarch. A panic-stricken man then interrupts the committee to inform them of the Burning of the Rumps, an infamous celebration in which effigies of Rump Parliament members were hanged and burned. "Hudibras Triumphant" (Plate 10) returns to the story of Hudibras and illustrates the scene in which Crowdero, the town fiddler with a wooden leg, is taken by Hudibras and Ralpho to a bastille to be imprisoned in the stocks. Hudibras pulls the imprisoned Crowdero by a rope while Ralpho mockingly affixes Crowdero's fiddle and case atop the stocks "in manner of a Trophy." However, Hudibras and Ralpho get an ironic reckoning by the prostitute Trussa (Trulla) later in the poem, when she defeats Hudibras, requests that Hudibras free Crowdero, and throws the two in the stocks. Hudibras and Ralpho represent the hypocrisy and ignorance Butler saw in the English Puritan leaders of the seventeenth century while the townspeople, including Crowdero and Trussa, represent virtue and the interests of the public. …

Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Collectible-Very Good. Two original black-and-white engravings on one leaf of white paper, "Frontispiece and its Explanation" (Plate 1) and "Sr. Hudibras his passing worth, The manner how he sally'd forth" (Plate 2). This print is likely disbound from a publication. Leaf measures 16 3/4" x 22 1/2." Each printed area (plate) measures 13" x 9 1/4." The print is very clean and intact except for age toning, slight foxing, several dampstains (most of which are somewhat faint and only affect a small part of the printed area), and some chipping on left and right edges not affecting text or printed areas. A Very Good copy. Two original engravings on one sheet of paper designed by William Hogarth and engraved by Thomas Cook. The following text credits the artists and is printed below Plate 1: "Design'd by W. Hogarth" and "Engrav'd by T. Cook." Credits below Plate 2 are almost identical with a small change to the word, "Engrav'd": "Design'd by W. Hogarth" and "Engraved by T. Cook." Publisher's information printed in bottom margin: "Published December 1st, 1801 by G. & J. Robinson, Paternoster Row, London." These engravings are reproductions engraved by Cook and modeled after the original designs of Hogarth. The poem is a satire upon Puritan leaders of the English Civil Wars. Throughout the poem, Hudibras is comically defeated on a regular basis, often at the hands of witty or courageous women. Each engraving includes an accompanying caption or part of the poem. These two scenes follow the content of the poem and are allegorical in nature. The "Frontispiece" (Plate 1) shows "Butler's Genius" in a flying chariot dragging Hudibras and Ralpho, who represent Hypocrisy and Ignorance, behind it. "Hudibras his passing worth" (Plate 2) depicts the beginning of the poem as Hudibras and Ralpho "sally forth" on their knightly quest. As noted in the frontispiece, Hudibras and Ralpho represent the hypocrisy and ignorance Butler saw in the English Puritan leaders of the seventeenth century. Contrasting the duo are the townspeople, who are often shown in a better light and represent virtue and the interests of the public.…
