Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Top of page block dyed red as issued. Some edge wear to top and bottom of striking jacket by Stratton and spine, extremities of jacket slightly browned, spine darkened and slightly faded, some slight overall sp…otting and time staining, corners slightly rubbed. Not price clipped (28s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 452pp, illustrated. In 1949 American anthropologist and archaeologist Carleton S. Coon (1904-81), unearthed approximately 31,000 agricultural artifacts, some dating to about 6050 BCE, while exploring Belt Cave in northern Iran. Two years later he returned to Iran and excavated Hotu Cave, which contained thick rock deposits that revealed an unbroken cultural sequence encompassing the Iron Age, the Bronze Age, and the New Stone Age. Beneath a layer of rock that had fallen from the ceiling of the cave, Coon found layers of sand and gravel from the last glacial period. Thirty nine feet (12 metres) down he discovered the fossilized bones of human beings. Those findings culminated in the publication of this book, which traced the history of humans 50,000 years from the Ice Age to modern times. Controversial even when it was first published, Coon set forth the theory that five distinct major races of humans existed before the emergence of homo sapiens as the dominant species. That theory was disputed and then rightly largely ignored by the scientific community. Coon's theories on race were widely disputed and discredited in his lifetime and are considered pseudoscientific in modern anthropology. Quite a scarce book. Jacket by Stratton, drawings by Richard Albany, Photos by Reuben Goldberg (illustratore).
