The first edition was published in 1887. Illustrated with twenty full-page plates, including a frontispiece entitled "Portrait of Allan Quatermain", and some small vignettes within the text. All twenty plates are present and in good condition, and the tissue-guard protecting the frontispiece is still in place and undamaged. ***A near fine copy in maroon cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine and front board. As with many of the books from this period, there is some wear to the boards, and some marks commensurate with age and handling over the last 135 years. The silver titles are still nice and bright. Apart from some light rubbing to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine, the boards remain completely undamaged, with no splitting to the fragile spine. Page block edges clean. Very slight reading lean to the binding, but the spine is tight. Internally the book is also very good, with a neat ownership stamp to the front free endpaper. None of the splitting to the fragile paper covering of the endpapers over the gutters that is often found with these Victorian bindings. The book is firm and secure with no loose pages. Interior pages clean with hardly any foxing. No creases or tears. Illustrations engraved on wood by J. Cooper from drawings by C. H. M. Kerr. ***188mm x 130mm. 278 pages with a 16pp publisher's catalogue at the back of the book (dated 12/90 with a print run total of 75,000). ***'Sir Henry Rider Haggard KBE (22 June 1856 - 14 May 1925) was an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. He was also involved in land reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature and including the eighteen Allan Quatermain stories beginning with "King Solomon's Mines", continue to be popular and influential. "Allan Quatermain" is an 1887 novel by H. Rider Haggard, and is the sequel to Haggard's 1885 novel "King Solomon's Mines". Allan Quatermain is the second novel and fourth overall story in the eighteen-part series of the same name, though chronologically it is the final entry. Haggard wrote the book over his summer holiday in 1885 immediately after King Solomon's Mines. It was first serialised in Longman's Magazine before being published in book form.' Book is tight, covers are clean with edge wear and corners exposed, spine chipped at edges and frayed at the hinges, no markings inside except owner signature, pages clean. Uncommon in the U.S. Myles Birket Foster (1825 - 1899) was a popular English illustrator, watercolour artist and engraver in the Victorian period. Although he had painted great numbers of landscape scenes from Scotland to the Mediterranean, it was after moving to Witley that Birket Foster produced the works for which he is best known - a sentimentalized view of the contemporary English countryside, particularly in the west Surrey area. Although criticized for their idealised view of rural life, they were recognized for their detail and execution. The Brothers Dalziel were a highly productive firm of Victorian engravers founded in 1839 by George Dalziel (1815-1902) and his brother Edward Dalziel (1817-1905). The Dalziel brothers worked with many important Victorian artists, producing illustrations for the burgeoning magazine and book market of the period. Until the advent of photo-mechanical processes c 1880, they were pre-eminent in their trade. Examples of their work can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.…

First edition of Edward Daniel Clarke's magnum opus "Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa" the author's personal account of a fascinating journey throughout three continents. Following a tour of Scandinavia in 1799, Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822) travelled through Russia and the Crimea before proceeding to Constantinople, Rhodes, and afterwards Egypt and Palestine. Greece was the country next visited. While touring this country, Clarke, as a mineralogist and antiquary, collected marbles, coins and vases and purchased a large ancient statue at Eleusis. From Athens he proceeded by land to Constantinople, and after a short stay in that city directed his course homewards through Rumelia, Austria, Germany and France. Each of the six volumes is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text vignettes and woodcuts, as well as full-page copper plates (many folded), depicting views, monuments, natives in traditional costume, ceremonies and processions, antiquities, etc. Includes several folded maps and charts. All the 185 copper plates and 157 vignettes and cuts are accounted for. Plates engraved by Joseph Skelton, R. Pollard, Laetitia and Elizabeth Byrne, F. R. Hay, J. Fittler, and R.
