Neat previous owners 3 line inscription (dated 1876) on the half title. Some minor spotting to a few pages but generally a clean and bright copy in the publishers highly decorative green cloth binding with bevelled edged boards. Elaborate gilt and blind stamped decoration and lettering to the front board. The rear board with a blind stamped decorative panel pattern. Spine fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Off white endpapers. All edges gilt. Some bumping to the extremities and the spine a little dulled but overall a very good copy of this pretty book. A classic piece of decorative Victoriana.…

Collated, the 'Disarming of Cupid' plate has been removed to volume II.The illustrations to this work are by C W Cope, W P Frith, C R Leslie, et al.The plates remain in a bright condition.A beautifully illustrated edition of these famous comedies, histories and tragedies.This edition of the Bard's works has been edited by Charles Knight. Knight was best known for his publications 'The Penny Magazine', 'The Penny Cyclopaedia' and the 'Local Government Chronicle'. The text of this work first appeared in his 'The Pictorial Shakspere' which was first published in the parts from 1838-1841. In uniform half morocco bindings, with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the spines and joints. Rear hinge and joint to volume I is weak, with the backstrip lifting from the text block. Both volumes are ex-library with stamps to the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Malvolio plate at page 303 to volume I is detached but present. The plate is therefore chipped to the edges. Tidemarks to the Wolsey frontispiece to volume II.
