Duped by the New York times as "blind poet of Hadley" Clarence Hawkes lost his site at a young age and befriended Helen Keller. He went on to write over 100 books, poems and essays.

Hardcover, no jacket, a splendid example of this vintage nature title for young or old adults, it features a clean, bright green cloth cover with deer illustrations in gold on the front cover and spine and 8 full-page black & white illustrations of deer throughout, each page has very nice margin-drawings, the book has mild surface-wear at the spine-ends and corners and a school ownership stamp is present but not prominent on the decorative front end-paper, no other remarkable flaws to this fine gift copy.

Head and tail slightly worn, 2 tiny splits to outer cloth at tail of spine, corners rubbed and slightly 'rounded', paper hinges inside covers cracked and neatly glued, small piece missing from blank top corner of front endpaper, no inscriptions, 3 small yellow paint spots on blank rear endpaper, 1 flower page torn across (geranium) and invisibly repaired wih no loss (see image 5), slight fingermarking and occasional very pale foxing to margins. Illustrated in colour throughout showing different cakes and breads some with legs or heads. Bound in original pictorial paper covered boards. About looking at all the cakes and biscuits that can be found in a cake shop for tea. However- Best of all is the household bread . The cover has light wear to extremities, slightly dusty; inside there is light foxing, else a very good copy. Charles Robinson (1870 1937) was a prolific British book illustrator. The first full book he illustrated was Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses (1895), He illustrated many fairy tales and children's books throughout his career."
