But in the hands of the anonymous 12th century Norman French adapter, who composed the Roman dEneas ca. 1160, the story is considerably amplified. Recent studies have demonstrated that the romancer, as is his habit, expands on suggestions found in the margins of his Virgil manuscript - whether they derive from antecedent interpretations that originate in Servius or Donatus, or in the heritage of other unknown scholiasts, commentators, or glossators dating from the great Virgilian era, the aetas virgiliana.
