See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item was enclosed in a letter from Serjeant Shee (the future Sir William Shee), offered separately, sent from the House of Commons on 17 February 1854, in which he writes: 'I enclose Mr. Cobdens own handwriting to send to the Papers -'. Attached to a corner at the head of the first pa…ge of the present item is a cutting from the Morning Herald newspaper, 18 February 1854, reproducing the details in the manuscript. That circumstance, taken with certain references in the Shee letter, suggest that the recipient of both was either James Johnstone, proprietor of the Morning Herald, or his editor Robert Knox. 2pp, 12mo. On the rectos of the two leaves of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with a few pin holes at top inner corner, and slight damage at the foot of the gutter, unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. In pencil in contemporary hand on front page, 'Cobdens writing / see accompg letter'. Text reads: 'Pet[ition]s Mr Cobden / Cropton Yorkshire. / for the repeal of the Taxes on Knowledge / Wm. Woods Mitchell of Arundel, printer & publisher of the "West Sussex Advertiser", for the repeal of the compulsory stamp on newspapers. - / Passengers in Emigrant ship Maidstone proceeding to the Colony of New South Wales for Ocean penny postage / Mechanics Institution Kingley Yorkshire for Decimal Coinage'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium on pink paper. In fair condition, lightly-aged, with minor evidence of removal from stub. A poem of 13 irregular stanzas. Begins: 'When some great warrior returns | Triumphant to his native land, | The heart of all the nation burns | To welcome him. In countless bands | They line the street, | And press to g…reet, | With shouts and cries and loud acclaim, | The man who saved them from the shame | And misery of defeat.' The seventh stanza is typical: 'They [ 'starving men and women' ] had been patient many years, | No wild, rebellious cry was theirs; | But unto heaven their groans and tears | Went upward mingled with their prayers. | And Famine stalked about the land, | And Death a mighty harvest reaped, | And Want and Sin went hand in hand, | And all the land in misery steeped; | While far and wide rang out the mournful cry, | We have no bread, and wanting bread, we die!' (The eighth stanza concerns the '[b]rown corn in many a furrow', to be found 'across the sea'.) Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and only two copies on OCLC WorldCat and COPAC (Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge).

The Anti-Corn Law League was in effect the resumption of the Anti-Corn Law Association, which had been created in London in 1836 but did not obtain widespread popularity. The Anti-Corn Law League was founded in Manchester in 1838. Richard Cobden and John Bright were the two principal figures of the movement while George Wilson, the president of the League, was in charge of administrative duties. Joseph Ivimey, the Superintendent Registrar for St Pancras, was an active member and acted as the League's solicitor. The aim of the league was the abolition of the Corn Laws, achieved in 1846, after which the league challenged protectionist practices in the United Kingdom. A combination of bad harvests, trade depression, and the Irish Famine strengthened the League's position and in 1846 the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, was persuaded to abolish the Corn Laws. The expected slump in agriculture did not take place.

Engraved ticket, 115 x 150 mm. The National Anti-Corn Law Bazaar was a massive fundraising and publicity event organised by the Anti-Corn Law League in the early 1840s to fund their campaign against grain import tariffs. Held notably in Manchester (1842) and Covent Garden (1845), these bazaars mobilised support, displayed goods…from industrial supporters, and helped pressure the government into repealing the Corn Laws in 1846.

Poster, 375 x 260 mm. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Samuel Birch [1757 - 1851] served as Lord Mayor of London 1814 - 15 and although a Tory he opposed the Corn Bill of 1815 and at the meeting referred to here, of the livery at common hall, made…a vigourous attack upon the intended prohibition of the free importation of foreign corn. The course he took on this occasion is commemorated by a medal struck in his honour on the obverse side of which is the bust of the lord mayor, and on the reverse a representation of a wheatsheaf, with the legend, 'Free Importation, Peace and Plenty.' Although reported widely in the press at the time I can find no other separately printed contemporary record of this speech.
