Hardcover. First edition. First printing. xi, [1], 244 p. Includes index. Frontis. 10 Maps (folding) in color at rear. The author, a General in the French Army, was the Chief of the French Military Mission attached to the British Army. This is an account of the military events in which the author took part while attached to British G.H.Q., during the first eighteen months of the war. It was written during 1921-1922 and had not been corrected since. From a sense of good feeling and propriety, the author postponed publication until the time when the principal English actors had departed. the volume summarises events in the days preceding the war; details the landing in France; happenings in Mons, le Cateau, and the retreat; military events in the regions of the Marne, the Aisne, Flanders and Ypres; the events of 1914 and 1915; and includes an epilogue appraising the post war position of the Countries of Western Europe, with particular regard to the position of France, the position of England ( including the authors analysis of the English political and social makeup), and the English/ French relationship. Good. No dust jacket. Ink notation near spine on page ix. Cover has some wear and soiling.…

Folio, two engraved portraits by an anonymous engraver (one as frontispiece, the other before the first page of text), and pp. [xx], 416, [2], 417-651; title page in red and black, a very little trivial worming at the beginning, else a large and clean copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt spine (new label; upper joint beginning to crack). The Shaftesbury copy, from the library at Wimborne St Giles, with characteristic library markings: 'Inner H1 - 6'. This book was bought on publication by someone who has marked it as bought in '1669 Febr' (i.e. February 1669/70) for 16 shillings. It was a year or two before this that John Locke joined the household of the first Earl of Shaftesbury, and it is possible that he marked it thus: the sample would be too small to identify the hand. This is the first and only edition of Cotton's translation, a large undertaking which he dedicated to Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury. Wing G788.…
