Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Very Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo. Original salmon cloth, spine stamped in black and gilt. Top edge black. Spine and edges sunned, gently soiled, pushing to spine ends. Affectionately inscribed by Sitwell in black ink and a frail hand to ffep: "To dear Beryl, with love, from, Osbert, Oct: 1953…", fep foxed, else, clean and bright. In H. Cowdell's fabulous illustrated dust, featuring both town and merpeople: spine darkened, wear and chipping to extremities, gently creased and nicked, spotting to rear panel. Very good/ very good A pleasing presentation copy of Osbert Sitwell's penultimate poetry collection, "concerned with snobs, failures, murderers etc" in Scarborough, affectionately inscribed in a frail hand, "To dear Beryl, with love," and decked in H. Cowdell's wonderful maritime dust jacket; given the fond inscription and Sitwell's printed dedication "To Arthur Waley," is seems likely that this copy was gifted to Sitwell's friend (and Waley's lover), the Anglo-Dutch ballet dancer and dance critic, Beryl de Zoete. Waley (18891966) and de Zoete (18791962) were friends of all three Sitwells, with Edith and Sacheverell also dedicating works to the British translator and orientalist. By 1953, the year of inscription, both Sitwell and de Zoete were in declining health. Philip Ziegler (1999) Osbert Sitwell: A biography (London: Pimlico).
