Aggiungi al carrelloHard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Reissue. Appears to be an original edition married to the movie tie-in jacket (Harrison Smith and Robert Haas listed on title page and spine, Grosset & Dunlap on jacket), but it's possible Grosset purchased unsold copies from Smith & Haas and added their own jacket, so we are calling this a reissue rather than a first edition married to a reissue jacket. Board edges slightly faded, jacket edges rubbed with some loss from corners. Binding tight and square, text clean, bright, and unmarked. 1936 Hard Cover. Harry Anderson jacket art depicting a World War I soldier in a trench, shown in a similar pose as a Prohibition-era gangster. Rear jacket flap advertises Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms. This novel inspired the 1937 film starring Spencer Tracy as the protagonist, who struggles to return to his old life after the war, and ends up turning to a life of crime informed by the skills he learned as a soldier. An interesting juxtaposition of the military novel and noir crime fiction, which also examines the disconnection many veterans feel upon returning home. Cowen served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I, for which he was awarded the Military Cross. …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A wonderful first printing of the first American edition [Farrar & Rinehart NY (1934)], inscribed by author William Joyce Cowen to his friend Jean Hersholt directly on the front free end paper. This was Cowen's first book and was described by the NY Times in April 1934 as "a quite exceptional achievement". Jean Hersholt was an important figure in early Hollywood and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award remains a staple of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The book is bound in beautiful contemporary quarter leather and is in near fine condition with some rubbing and shelf wear at the extremities but with no remainder marks, a tight and square binding, sharp corners, a clean top stain, with no owner inscriptions or highlighting and no staining or marking. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information concerning this unique and exceptional association copy. Inscribed by Author(s). Book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Contains publisher's 1936 date printed to the title page. Adapted for the 1937 Van Dyke directed film starring Spencer Tracy, Franchot Tone, Rose Duffy, Cliff Edwards and Charles Trowbridge. Cyril Hume is credited with the majority of the screenplay, however many others had their talented pens involved including the author W.J. Cowen, and James M. Cain. A tough guy gangster novel depicting a boy becoming a man who went bad, loved guns, was a soldier, a gangster, in jail, and out for revenge on an old friend. Scarce, especially in the first edition. Mild damp-stain to upper rear cover, two-inch long tan stain to fore-edge of front cover, age-toning to the spine, else good and sound in brown-beige linen with burgundy embossed illustration depicting a rifle, a gun, and automatic weapon, and a helmet to the front cover, and with burgundy titles and rules titles to the spine; lacking a dust jacket.
