Original drawing. 17" x 11 " (in frame 19" x 12 "). An artist rendering of a proposed Auditorium of Music in Holyoke, Massachusetts for the architectural firm Putnam & Cox. It is estimated that it was drawn around 1913 based on the models of cars and women's clothing depicted in the drawing. It appears that this building was nev…er constructed, and no known Holyoke auditorium seems to be related to this original drawing. Putnam & Cox Architects was formed in 1902, a partnership of William Edward Putnam, Jr., and Allen Howard Cox. William Putnam graduated from Harvard in 1896 and from MIT in 1898; Allen Cox attended MIT and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1902, soon after they became partners, Putnam and Cox were the winners of a competition to design a new building for the Boston Athenaeum to be built at the northwest corner of Arlington and Newbury. The Athenaeum subsequently decided to remain on Beacon Street and the proposed building was not built. Among Putnam and Cox's works were the Hotel Bellevue, the American Unitarian Association headquarters on Beacon Street, the Kirstein Business Branch of the Boston Public Library, Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, and a number of fraternity buildings at Amherst College and Mt. Holyoke College.
