(Woollcott was a critic and commentator for the New Yorker Magazine, and was the inspiration for Sheridan Whiteside, the main character in the play, "The Man Who Came To Dinner"). Last page states that 75 copies w…ere printed, and that this one is #57. These 75 copies were given to some very famous people of the time, including Groucho Marx and others. This particular copy has a small inscription by the author indicating that is was in the library of Herbert Bayard Swope (1882-1958), who was a U.S. editor and journalist, a Democratic New York delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1932, 1936, and 1940, and was the first recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Reporting in 1917. Translated from German. Extraordinary account of four wounded men - three Germans & one English POW. Cloth-covered binding is solid, with some wear at the corners and edges and at the head and tail of the spine. Some small rips on the spine. Interior is excellent, though it has some pages with a little extra paper on the edge, and then alternate pages missing same. Privately printed books are sometimes this way. 78 pgs.

British movie edition of this classic B. Traven novel. Traven, one of the most elusive and mysterious novelists of the twentieth century, remains largely unknown despite the translation of his books into most major world languages. The majority of the English-speaking world knows Traven only through the movie version of "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," starring Humphrey Bogart.

In the scarce dust jacket, corners clipped but price of $2.50 intact; Very Good with sunning and small hole to spine panel, several faint stains, and moderate wear including several splits and edge tears (up to 1-3/4 inches), of which two are repaired with tape to verso. Mileck IX 60a, Waibler UE 196. Together with two privately printed and scarce poems, Klage und Trost (1954) and Das Lied von Abels Tod (c. 1957), each on single-fold A5 sheet. The poems are enclosed in Hesse's stationery envelope, addressed in his handwriting to Frau Loni Pflug in Munich. Near Fine with light wear, toning, and foxing. Mileck III, 236 & 308a. A beautiful copy of the first American edition of Hesse's best-known novel, in which his surrogate Harry Haller finds his way though suicidal despair. The book was a bestseller in Germany but shocked many American reviewers with scenes of casual sex and drug use; one generally positive reviewer warned that the book was not for "those who are irremediably steeped in the conventionally rigid formulas" dividing human activities into Good and Bad. Henry Holt did not issue a second edition of Steppenwolf until 1947, and it was not until the blossoming of 1960s counterculture that the United States experienced its "Hesse Boom" and millions of copies of his works sold. Copies from the small print run of 1929 are rare. The two privately printed poems are even harder to find. Hesse sent individual poems to his correspondents, including the Loni Pflug to whom this envelope is addressed. Klage und Trost was printed March 1954 as a thank-you for "so many dear letters and well-wishes." Hesse, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946, continued to receive honors, visits, and letters throughout his quiet final years in Switzerland. Poems like these are his final literary legacy.
