Eight photographs, modern prints taken from contemporary negatives, 130 x 100 mm. [6 images]; 120 x 165 mm. [5 images]. The source of the original photographs is unknown, but since the gardens closed in 1877, and were built over soon afterwards, they were presumably made in the 1870s. The represent: Italian Walk, The Grotto, Swiss Cottage [2 images], Orchestra [2 images], Fireworks Temple [2 images], Centre Walk, plus 2 unidentified views, possibly of the entrance. …

Eugene Godard [1827 - 90], was a French aeronaut who started building his own balloons in 1845 using hydrogen. Following a meeting with the famous balloonist Charles Green in 1849 he switched to coal gas which was cheaper. He also assisted in the invention and construction of the first steam airship. He pioneered the use of observation balloons during the Franco-Austrian War of 1859. Pioneering the use of hot air generation for balloons, he later built a massive balloon, Le GÃ ant, which acted as a reconnaissance platform for photographers. Godard built an even larger craft, L'Aigle (The Eagle), whose furnace weighed 445 kilograms (980 pounds) and had a volume that dwarfed that of Le GÃ ant with 14,000Âm3 (490,000ÂcuÂft).…

The ball advertised here was intended ". to form, as nearly as can be, a Picture of what Ranelagh formerly was. The Same Music, the Same Glees, the Same Somgs, the Same Choruses, the Same Dances, the Same Costume as performed at Raelagh One Hundred Years Ago.". …

"A Colossal Panorama of Sebastapol, Painted expressly for the Fete from the best authorities - when the Storming of the Mamelon Vert and the Rifle Pits will be effectively portrayed by 500 Soldiers & Three Battering Rams." The diorama, apparently accompanied by a tableau vivant, or perhaps a recreation, 'celebrated' the capture of the Mamelon Vert fortress by the French assisted by the British, in June of that year.…

He designed his own balloon, making his first flight in 1847 [not 1848 as stated elsewhere], and displayed a number of tricks, rather than simple ascents. "He made many ascents, the 114th of which was from the hippodrome of Vincennes at Bordeaux, with the Royal Cremorne balloon, on 8 Sept. 1850. He was seated on the back of a pony suspended from the car. Gale descended at Auguilles. When the pony had been released from its slings, the peasants holding the balloon ropes, not understanding his directions, relaxed their hold, and Gale was carried up by the only partially exhausted machine. The car overturned, but he clung to the tackling for a time, and was borne out of sight. Next morning his body was found in a wood several miles away." DNB.…
