Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Will G. Mein (illustratore). 2nd Edition. Cripps, Arthur S. Magic Casements. London: Duckworth & Co., [1913]. Second edition, first with illustrated endpapers. The first edition appeared in 1905. Small octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] ix [x] 1-185 [186] [187-190: publisher's ads]. Original dark green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel stamped in blind with publisher's trademark. Illustrated by Will G. Mein with pictorial endpapers (duo-tone woodcuts) that are show Mein's usual craftsmanship. Aside from a faint damp stain near rear bottom corner of back cover, a fine copy. #3789. $25. Collection of 11 stories of sentimental Catholic piety. This title was issued as part of the publisher's Roadmender Series, with more than a dozen similar works inspired by the popularity of The Roadmender and Other Papers (1902), a series of Christian devotional writings written during its author's bed-ridden last years. Michael Fairless, the stated author, was later revealed to be a pseudonym for Margaret Fairless Barber (1869-1901), who had struggled with serious illness most of her life. This title was reprinted over 30 times over the next decade, and was followed by the posthumous publication of several other similar works of fiction and non-fiction. Cripps' work is steeped in ecclesiastical atmosphere.
