Aggiungi al carrelloFull Calf. Condizione: Good. New Edition. 8vo. 1786. New edition, corrected. Collates as ESTC T57348 wanting half title but with the addition of a later frontis portraying the protagonists Martha Reay and her murderer, the Rev. James Hackman and the murderous act itself. A novel by Sir Herbert Croft based on the murder of Martha Reay who was shot by her jealous lover, Hackman, at Covent Garden in 1779. Much of the work concerns literary forgeries particularly those of Thomas Chatterton. Croft had fraudulently obtained letters relating to Chatterton from the poet's sister and was subsequently exposed by Robert Southey. In turn, the novel is said to have inspired William Henry Ireland in his own Shakespeare forgeries. Interesting early m/s notes concerning this title on first blank. Very clean in contemporary flame calf and attractive 19th century leather respine. Images available on request.

Aggiungi al carrellopp. viii, 296. 8vo in 4s. Workaday half calf, marbled boards, later binding. Tilte slightly browned. 1st edition. ODNB.This rather sensational volume went through seven editions, with many variations in the text, and deals with the clandestine love of James Hackman, a one-time army officer and Norfolk clergyman, for Martha Ray, the mistress of Lord Sandwich, who was shot by Hackman as she was leaving Covent Garden Theatre on 7 April 1779. Into this work Croft inserted a huge interpolation on Chatterton. Many years later this circumstance inflicted an indelible stain on Croft's reputation. In a letter inserted in the Monthly Magazine for November 1799 he was accused by Robert Southey of having obtained in 1778 Chatterton's letters from the boy's mother and sister under false pretences, of having published the letters without consent, and without awarding to the owners an adequate remuneration from the large profits he had himself made by their publication, and of having kept the originals for twenty-one years. To these charges Croft made a very unsatisfactory answer in the pages of the Gentleman's Magazine, which was subsequently published separately as Chatterton and love and madness: a letter from Denmark to Mr Nichols, editor of the Gentleman's Magazine, 1800.

Aggiungi al carrelloBoth issues 8vo (roughly 30.5 x 19.5 cm), 6 pp (each a loose leaf in a bifolium). Both printed on brittle watermarked laid paper. Both unbound, and stabbed as issued, and both on aged and chipped paper, but with the text clear and entire. Each issue with the title in an expansive calligraphic design. The full slug, at the bottom of the last page of both issues, reads: 'Printed and Published by ETHERINGTON, at No 25, opposite the South Door of St. Paul's (where Letters, post-paid, to the LITERARY FLY will be received). To be had also of all the Booksellers and news-carriers in Town and Country. | To be continued regularly every Saturday. [Price Fourpence.]' Issue 13 contains a letter 'To the Gentleman who drives the Literary Fly' and another 'To the Conductor of the Literary Fly'. Issue 14 mostly consists of a long untitled whimsical essay. According to Croft's entry in the Oxford DNB, ten thousand copies of the first issue of the 'Literary Fly' were 'distributed gratuitously on 18 January 1779, but the journal soon died of inanition'. Very scarce. CUL has a holding, anbd Kansas harbours one issue.
