Faint marks and tiny corner creases on the front cover. -- This special issue of Gra…zer Philosophische Studien addresses a persistent problem in the philosophy of self-consciousness: that research on its conceptual and nonconceptual forms, its intersubjective dimensions and its temporal structure has proceeded largely in isolation, often owing to methodological differences between analytic philosophy, phenomenology and cognitive science. The essays collected here work to bridge these divides. A central thread is the question of what minimal conditions must be met for a mental state to count as genuinely self-conscious. Several contributors argue that merely having a first-person perspective is not sufficient - that one must be aware of having one - but they disagree about whether this awareness requires linguistic capacity, concept possession or something more primitive. This disagreement opens onto a second major theme: the role of other minds in the emergence of self-awareness. If distinguishing one's own mental and bodily states from those of others is a precondition of self-consciousness, then developmental psychology and social cognition become directly relevant to what might appear a purely philosophical question. The volume draws on both, grounding its conceptual arguments in empirical findings about infant development and theory of mind. A third strand examines whether being a self is a built-in feature of conscious experience or an achievement of self-interpretation shaped by narrative and temporality. By placing these three lines of inquiry side by side, the volume makes visible connections between them that had been obscured by disciplinary boundaries. The collection is a useful reference for philosophers of mind, phenomenologists and cognitive scientists concerned with the preconditions and developmental origins of self-conscious thought.
