Three scarce volumes of 'Raphael's Astronomical Ephemeris', reprints of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, for the years 1842, 1878, and 1891.This series of ephemeris originated by Robert Cross Smith, an astrology using the pseudonym 'Raphael', first published in the early nineteenth century, though the name was owned by a handful of people during the decades. The 1842 'Ephemeris' was by a Mr. Medhurst, whereas both 1878 and 1891 were by Robert Thomas Cross, who was still 'Raphael' by the time that these reissues were published. The Raphael ephemeris present a series of tables used in astrology to determine the position of the sun, moon, and planets. Each of these volumes details their positions for each of the years. Thus, these scientific works offer a unique insight into life during these years. The original Raphael, Robert Cross Smith, was significant for popularising the system of astrological house division known as the Placidean. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, generally smart, a little edge worn. Wraps are age-toned with spots and handling marks. Wear to the backstrip of 1842. Internally, firmly bound. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Raphaels Ancient Manuscript of Talismanic Magic containing nearly one hundred rare talismanic diagrams, seals of spirits, charms, magical squares, and pentacles for orations and invocation of elementary spirits, and the magical ritual of their CONJURATION; explaining their influence and hidden powers Recondite Wisdom by Raphael; prepared for publication under the editorship of L. W. de Laurence, author of many works listed see photo; The de Laurence Co., Chicago. Ill., U.S.A. From the introduction The art of Talismanic Magic, being selections from the works of Rabbi Solomon, Agrippar, & Barrett, etc. by Raphael. This book is a facsimile of a hand-written and hand-illustrated manuscript, by Raphael dated 1880. Robert Thomas Cross (1850 1923) was a British astrologer, and one in a series of editors of Raphael's Ephemeris, started by Robert Cross Smith in 1827, who all took the pseudonym Raphael. L. W. de Laurence (1868 1936) was an American author and publisher on occult and spiritual topics. His publications, including his edition of the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses influenced the practise of magic among the African diaspora in the Americas, as well as in the Caribbean. Rabbi Solomon (1235 1310) was one of the greatest codifiers and Talmudists of his time in Spain. Agrippar (1486 1535) was a German Renaissance polymath, physician, legal scholar, soldier, knight, theologian, and occult writer. His most famous book was De occulta philosophia libri tres (Three Books Concerning Occult Philosophy, Book 1 printed Paris 1531; Books 2 3 in Cologne 1533). Agrippa argued for a synthetic vision of magic whereby the natural world combined with the celestial and the divine through Neoplatonic participation, such that ordinarily licit natural magic was in fact validated by a kind of demonic magic sourced ultimately from God. By this means Agrippa proposed a magic that could resolve all epistemological problems raised by skepticism in a total validation of Christian faith. This large format book 104 pages, bound in textured leatherette boards, is in fine condition. A very scarce book and this copy is without a blemish.
